Although it's not new, the Net Promoter Score is gathering momentum as a way for businesses to measure their performance through their customers' eyes. So what is the net promoter Score based on? - at the heart of it is the ultimate question  'How likely is it that you would recommend us to a friend?'

Sitting behind this is the fundamental perspective that every company's customers can be divided into three categories. "Promoters" are loyal enthusiasts who keep buying from a company and urge their friends to do the same. "Passives" are satisfied but unenthusiastic customers who can be easily wooed by the competition. And "detractors" are unhappy customers trapped in a bad relationship.

The key is to try and turn more and more of your customers into Promoters, a task that Apple has had huge success with, creating a vast customer base of 'Apple Evangelists' who promote Apple products and ethos at every opportunity.
