Three Health Benefits from Traveling

Attorney Heidi Scott, a graduate of the Southern Illinois School of Law, divides her time between her general practice and her role as owner of Schuyler Brown Land Title in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. Away from her professional activities, Heidi Scott enjoys traveling the world and experiencing new cultures.

Traveling appeals to people for reasons as different as their personalities, including anything from the chance to visit historic sites in foreign lands to the basic element of getting away. Yet traveling can offer much more. Here are three health benefits active travelers may get from exploring new places.

A sharper mind - Experiencing new environments allows travelers to engage their minds in productive ways. This introduction to new sights, smells, and sounds strengthens the brain and can even reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

A reduction in stress levels - Travel presents an alternative to the normal schedule and all of its sources of stress. Disconnecting for a period of time enables cortisone levels to balance, and that chemical effect can continue after returning home.

A stronger immune system - Visiting new places means experiencing new types of germs and bacteria. Having this kind of microbial interaction in foreign settings often strengthens the immune system, contributing to better long-term health.
