I wondered "how did they pack two stereo channels into a single groove, in the old vinyl records?" This is a good visual explanation... it's a clever solution. http://www.vinylrecorder.com/stereo.html

I wrote a small Python class for parsing and graphically manipulating text files. It includes fill, 2D find/replace, and edge filters. Here's an example using the class to convert a text file (containing a tessellation) into a maze:

Here's a word ladder puzzle game (and solver) I wrote a while back. A word ladder is a string of words that change one letter at a time. For example: "cat", "cot", "dot", "dog" is a word ladder that connects "cat" and "dog". I tweaked the game to run as a standalone application (instead of a java applet). The source code is on github:

I tested out Linux Deepin a little this weekend.  It's based on Ubuntu.  Overall, it look somewhat like a mid point between Android, Mac and Windows (you  can theme it to look more like Windows if you want with a lower menu bar).  Though I couldn't get the 2014.2 version of the Live CD to boot without going to the installer, so I tried the older 2014.1 Live CD.  Some areas (like the Game center) still need some Chinese to English translation, but overall, it's very polished.

Interesting point -- "Fingerprints should not be used to secure anything. You leave them everywhere".

I'm not sure if everyone remembers the PXL 2000 camcorder... it was released in the late 80's.   It sold for about $100 and recorded on a tape cassette.   I had a stack of old PXL tapes (with no camcorder), and was curious what was on them.  So I worked on writing a decoder to convert the PXL analog signal to digitial video.  I've been able to decode 25 year old PXL tapes with it :-)
