I'm a fan of machine sewing for garment construction and quilting since I work full-time/overtime and really don't feel my hand sewing skills are very satisfactory. My first sewing experience was embroidering a pre-printed embroidered piece (which I still have, framed) when I was very young (under 10, for sure) and learned to crochet using crochet thread typically used for pillowcase edging or doilies when I was about 9 because we were on a car trip with my parents and grandparents and Grama had her crocheting along! So I learned in the backseat of the car while we journeyed. Recently I did discover a hand sewing project that I truly enjoy (mostly because my stitches won't show in the end) and that is sewing hexies! And it is nice to have something different to take with me on long car trips along with my crocheting. I doubt I'll do enough to make a quilt but time will tell! I just bought my granddaughter, who is six, a small real sewing machine and she has sewed with me on my machine, running the foot pedal. However, she has also hand sewn some small projects and I will try to alternate machine and hand sewing, because I agree, it is an important skill to have.

I am very excited about the projects you create from "nothing" - I have been inspired to recreate my wardrobe as I work my way down in weight - taking in those much-loved wardrobe staples and refashioning 2 or 3 not so fave items into something new!
