Don't Play With Fire

This is smoke photographed in a studio setting. The smoke was created using incense and photographed with an off camera flash to the right of the camera.

I am posting this because today our city was covered in a blanket of smoke caused by forest fires that are raging out of control to the north west. Many of those fires started from some serious thunderstorms we have had over that last little while but there is always at least one that was started as a result of someone being careless with either fire or a cigarette. The single moment of tossing a cigarette butt out the window of a moving vehicle or carelessly tossing a butt into a wooded area while walking or hiking can cause millions of dollars in damage. Not to mention it endangers the lives of residents in the area as well as the men and women that go out to fight that fire. If you have ever had to fight a forest fire, which I know most people have not, I will tell you it is not a pleasant experience. I seriously feel the pain of those out there sacrificing for the rest of us. The temperatures have been around 30 Celsius most of this week. Those fighting the fires are equipped with a large amount of protective gear that is hot to wear on a cool day. Add the temperature of a sunny day to the heat produced by a blazing fire and our firefighters are cooking inside that protective gear. Now add to that having to carry equipment to fight the fire, packing it into hard to reach areas and then busting their butts to try to put out a blaze. Men and women that fight forest fires are some of the toughest and bravest people out their and we owe it to them to be more careful with campfires, matches, cook stoves, cigarettes and anything else that can possibly ignite a fire.

To all of you firefighters out there. In Canada, the USA and the rest of the world you have my thanks for your hard and determined effort.

+1 and Share if you support firefighters.

Since the passing of our dog J.D., the house hasn't been the same.  Bailey, our beagle would just lay around not wanting to do anything but eat and sleep.  She even didn't want to play with the kids anymore because her companion was gone. The rest of us felt like there was something missing after J.D. was gone.  So we decided to search around for a new puppy to add to our family and we finally found that perfect puppy. Meet Bear. He's an eight week old, Australian Shepherd. Brought him home this evening. Bailey was absolutely excited.  She actually to act like her normal self again and welcomed the puppy with open paws. It was absolutely priceless.

I know I haven't posted any photos in a while, after being terribly sick with a cold for a week. Then, of course, my children all sick with a cold it's been pretty hectic around my household.  Now with everyone finally on the mend, I am able to actually sit in front of my laptop and process several of my photos that I have taken over the past 4 week.

In these photos I managed to get some nice captures of the sun just lighting up the tops of the trees in my back yard and in the front too.  I love how some of them turned out with just seeing a glimmer of light through the branches.

On Sunday morning, we did the hardest thing we had to do.  We had to put down our 13 year old Sheperd/Sheltie, Jack Daniels (aka. Jay and J.D.)  On Thursday morning he had a terrible stroke, which in the end caused his nose to constantly bleed and cause severe breathing problems.  My 2 oldest daughters took it pretty hard but they made J.D.'s last night with us a memorable one.

We will miss you J.D.

Well this was different.  This afternoon we drove to a location north of Edmonton to the Edmonton Jurassic Forest.  I was expecting some cheesy stationary creatures in the trees but they had a lot of moving dinosaurs.   My attempts at video failed but I did get a few good shots in.  Check out the facility at  http://www.jurassicforest.com/index.php
