The Connecticut General Assembly's Environment Committee's new bill establishes a fee of $15 per ton of carbon dioxide emissions when burning fossil fuels (gasoline, diesel, heating oil, natural gas, propane, etc.) beginning January 1, 2019. The bill also calls for annual increases of at least $5 per ton of emissions each subsequent year.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, upgrading to a new high-efficiency heating system can often cut your fuel bills and your pollution output in half. For example, upgrading your furnace or boiler from 60% to 90% efficiency in an average cold-climate house could mean saving as much as a full tank of heating oil and 2.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
