Stan Lee's creative energy has been with me for my whole life. I learned to read as much on back issues of Spider-Man as I did on Dr. Seuss. The characters he and his incredible collaborators created are now seen in every country, heard in every language. He told us that the weird and the freaky could be heroes, and that every weakness might also be a strength. He told us that families come in different shapes and sizes; that all people, no matter how different, are worth fighting for; and that with great power comes great responsibility.

Excelsior!

The challenge to name Jewish thinkers and creators who have influenced me has been difficult, not because there are so few, but because there are so many.

Firstly, it would be improper for me to start without acknowledging my wife and her mother's family, Lithuanian Jews who run the spectrum from "cultural" to "very liberal Reform." I've really enjoyed having the firsthand experience of being connected to a Jewish family, especially since I didn't know a single Jewish person before I was in law school in my 20s.

Moving on to artists and entertainers. Off the top of my head: Leonard Cohen; Mel Brooks, Gene Wilder, Harold Ramis. The voices and faces and attitude of my upbringing are suffused with the presence of Jewish artists, comedians, storytellers, and romantics. Mostly comedians, I guess. I don't think I'm the only person who was a teenage boy in the 90s who worshipped Adam Sandler. More recently, as I've gotten into photography, the work of Annie Leibovitz has been an endless inspiration; her art is, to me, transcendent.

In the category of scholarship, any lawyer who failed to mention Spinoza would be remiss. His ethical philosophy, based on inquiry, is so fundamental to the Enlightenment that much of the modern world would likely be different without him. More recently, Steven Pinker's reminder not to reject the principles of the Enlightenment helped provide me with hope and moral structure when I was starting to lean towards nihilism.

Oh! I almost forgot: Supreme Court of Canada Justice Rosalie Abella! "It's not just what you stand for. It's what you stand up for."

The other night I went out to do some city skyline photos, and the moon was shining bright and full... about 90 degrees away from the skyline. So, photo trickery to the rescue.

Just had an app update for Google+. Talk about providing first aid to the condemned.

I sorta feel like this person hasn't read any cyberpunk in the last several years. They clearly missed Company Town and Crux and Infomocracy.

Sometimes you think you can get away with a handheld long exposure, but then you can't, so you take it as permission to go nuts in the edits.

I can't remember how commenting on photos works in G+, but if possible, please comment on your favourite!

Me: I'm just calling to find out about these camera accessories I ordered.
CSR: Oh, you're a photographer? What do you mostly shoot?
Me: Uh... landscapes, some wildlife... about my order...
CSR: Oh, yeah! I do event photography, weddings, parties. It's a side job but I would like to go pro some day...

Struggling to find the right set of edits to make this image really pop. The lighting was very difficult: overcast and foggy, with the glow of the sun directly behind the falls. Still, I think that came out alright.
