- 16 WAPT NewsSports Director
Aslan Hodges joined 16 WAPT News in August of 2011 as Sports Director. He comes to the Capital City from Bozeman, MT where he was sports director for CBS affiliate’s KXLF/KBZK-TV.
Aslan is no stranger to the heat and humidity of the South, as he was born and raised in Florida and attended the Florida State University where he graduated with cum laude honors and a degree in political science and communications. Yes, that means he’s a Florida State Seminole fan to the core, but he admits -- begrudgingly -- that the SEC is king and he’s excited to cover two of the most dedicated fan bases in the South’s super conference in Ole Miss and Mississippi State…or is it, Mississippi State and Ole Miss? Aslan is excited to jump into coverage of the third big state program, Southern Miss, and all the college programs this area has to offer.
Before his stint as sports director in Bozeman, Aslan began as a news reporter in the historic mining town of Butte, MT. While the Big Sky Conference isn’t the SEC, Aslan previously worked as a football beat reporter for Warchant.com--the Rivals.com affiliate for Florida State. In Tallahassee, he had the distinct honor of covering one of the legends in the game in Bobby Bowden, as well as renowned defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews. In addition to these two Seminole stalwarts, he reported on several former FSU players who now call the NFL home.
He remembers the first game he covered for his alma mater atop the press box of Doak Campbell Stadium in September of 2005. In that game FSU defeated their bitter rival The University of Miami, on of all things, a botched field goal in the final minute of the 4th quarter. The victory snapped an agonizing six-game losing streak Florida State had versus their rival to the south.
Aslan had his fill of eight month long, sub-arctic winters and is glad to be back in the heat and humidity of the South where he’s a quick road trip away from his beloved Seminoles….and a much shorter plane ride from his family and friends. He is ecstatic to join forces with Ray Coleman to bring central Mississippi its premier sports program, Blitz 16, every Friday night in the fall. While being in SEC country has its perks, it’s hard to beat the passion and excitement of Friday nights. And yes Southern Miss fans, he knows you’re important too.
