I lost my father almost 10 years ago to cancer. As I laid my hand on his chest and felt his heart beat for the very last time, I think what I remember the most is the overwhelming finality of the moment; that there was no "do over" or "wait, go back...rewind the tape." It was just ...done. I knew he had suffered greatly during the last 2 years of his life and I knew that he was in a better place. To deal with the grief immediately, my mother, my two sisters and I drank a shot of his favorite whiskey as we toasted our love for him moments after he passed; and then my sister decided I had too much grey hair and spent the afternoon dying my hair in my mother's kitchen! Honest to goodness...true story! Oh to be sure, there was sadness and many tears in the hours and days to come; but we found a way to find a little humor for a moment or two to help deal with it and I know if he could have, he would have been laughing right along with us.
