Received this scan today. I think it's Columbia, but positive ID and type designation would help too.

The wavy lines are in a 7-5 pattern, rather than 6-6 that I'm familiar with.

Another illustration for the U. S. Army Tank Corps. In this case, the soldiers could buy pre-printed envelopes with the logo and slogan.

The January 2015 issue of the "Machine Cancel Forum" is out. The excellent articles in this issue include a writeup by Mike Ellingson on Hampden machines. In addition, our editor, Andy Savakis, has added a fine article on identifying 19th Century machine cancellations.

From David Ricardo no less. Money quote states that government taking away the fruits of capitalism would:

"annihilate half the productive industry of the country, and would be more fatal to the poor labourer than to the rich capitalist himself."

Thanks to #donboudreaux  and his great #cafehayek  blog.

New auction is posted. The auction will close February 17, 2015. Lots of good material here, including more paquetboat items, and a large array of American flag machines. Also, Don points out:

"I think we have a new early date for a Doremus cancel from Saint Marys, Ohio -- May 1, 1905."

Machine Cancel Society Auction Closing February 17, 2015. This is a news item for The International Machine Cancel Society. The Society web pages provide information and links for collectors and all other interested people, to the hobby of collecting and studying the marchine-made markings placed on mail, not only in the United States, but around the world. The canceling machines have changed over the years, from purely mechanical devices, to mod...

The latest Machine Cancel Society auction is now online! One of the featured items is a new find Doremus. There are plenty of other Doremus machine examples, as well as over 8 pages of American flag cancellations. There is a good group of non-US machines as well.

Check out the auction at:

http://machinecancel.org/news/2015_02_auction.html

This auction closes May 19, 2015.

Victrola in the Alaska Transportation Museum, Wasilla. I borrowed the 50mm F1.4 Nikkor to use on my #nikon   #d700  and it worked great in the low light inside the museum. Got plenty of #bokeh  in the photos I took.

Excellent article that makes you look at the Education cartel in a new light. How about a "local grocery board" that sets prices and availability of food.

Thanks again to #donboudreaux  and the great #cafehayek  blog. The comments are worth reading, too.

About time someone pointed out the hypocrisy of yet another march, yet another hashtag.

Sorry, I can't restrain myself any longer. I am sick of hearing about the Paris "Peace" march or "Unity" rally or whatever the lame MSM deems to call it at any particular time. It was not an act of bravery, a show of lack of ...

Key quote: “In a way, the attack on suburbia is class warfare,” says Kotkin, who credits sprawl with allowing middle- and working-class families to live in comfort instead of being relegated to crowded apartments in the urban core. “If you made people live the way new urbanites want us to live, we would see a birth rate like Japan’s,”

Interesting article in +Forbes about the suburbs and what is happening with housing in general. Worth a read.

The suburbs are back. Bob Toll is selling McMansions. How the sprawling gluttony of the suburbs makes us richer.

Good quote about the history of England and how roads and canals were created by private enterprise. My own reading on the history of the railways in England follow the same pattern of private investment.

The quote mentions how well developed the infrastructure was in England because:

"nowhere else were roads and canals typically the work of private enterprise, hence responsive to need (rather than to prestige and military concerns) and profitable to users."

Introduction
I developed software in the supercomputer industry for many years, including a stint at Cray Research. Now retired, my wife and I enjoy travel throughout the U.S. in our motorhome, and the world through cruising.

I still program in Java, and have done pro bono websites for organizations that support my other hobbies, such as postal history. I am a member of the Technical Support Committee of the American Philatelic Society.

Our retirement "work" is taking photographs during our many travels. Check the link to Flickr on this page.
