A few thoughts on the "leaked" Supergirl pilot

(Note I am going to keep this spoiler free, for those that have not seen it yet)

Days ago a CBS First Look of the pilot was released. Walking away from the 6 minute teaser left me excited and hopeful for what was due to come later in the year. Sitting here now typing this having just watched the pilot that excitement has gone and the hope has been crushed.

Let's start with the good and the first point we should address is the casting/look of Supergirl. Now Helen Slater as Supergirl will forever be Supergirl to me. Watching the 1984 movie as a child left a deep impact, one that still hold strong. That being said Melissa Benoist looks fab. The outfit is just great. In fact the casting of everyone seems to be spot on. Top marks for Helen Slater and Dean Cain being cast as Kara's parents, hopefully we will have the chance to see more of them throughout the series. Along with the general look and feel that comes across, and the special effects, visually all is well

Now the bad. I am trying to figure out just what made it so bad for me. And it was bad. Was it the acting? The stifled wooden approach? How the interactions between the cast seemed painfully forced on many places. But I cannot blame the actors. Not when the script was so painful. The dialogue was.....well I am pretty sure you and I could come up with something better. Then the plot itself. Did they find it at the bottom of a cereal box written on a napkin? Perhaps the script is the reason for the bad acting. The cast know a bad deal when they see it and every one of them rebelled and phoned in the performance they did.

I am even more now convinced that it was CBS themselves that "leaked" this. They are worried they have a turkey on their hands and they want to see what we all think.

When the end of the day comes however when the rest of the episodes arrive I will still watch them. There is hope better writers will come on board. That the cast will find their grove and a half decent show will emerge. I hope it does. For too long a female led superhero film/TV show has been ignored because those that "control" the airwaves claim no one wants to see a strong female lead, that no one will watch that. What people will not watch is a bad show. Right now that is what we have been given. We deserve better than this.

We have already discussed transistor-level simulation for the 6502 [1] in [2,3,4]. transistor level simulation has now been taken a step further by not only including the CPU, but other chips as well. Read more on a transistor level simulation of the Atari 2600 [5]
...
The web-based, javascript simulation of visual6502 was there for some time, but the first, internal only runtime was the python one. Additional simulations for the Atari's TIA, RIOT I/O chip, and the program ROM have been added to create a complete computer.
In fact, as can be seen from the SIGGRAPH slides on the 2010 presentation of the visual6502 team, Atari 2600 simulation was their initial goal [6]!

The python runtime can render images in a window, so you can in fact look at how each video line is drawn separately by the simulation, while seeing the 6502 writes in the console window.

The news is that you can now simply download it and play with it yourself [5]! Let it run long enough, and it draws a classic 2600 game screen!

I wonder what will be next? Can we finally find out about the infamous VIA 6522 shift register bug that made it so slow? Or will we have a full simulated C64 or Apple II? What would be your favourite?

Hat tip to +Andrew Reid  for noticing us!

Progressives seem to have more influence than ever in the party this year, but why is it so difficult for progressives to get a seat at the table when they matter the most?
