“Everyone watching these horrific actions will be struck by how they were organized via social media,” Cameron said in an emergency session of Parliament on Thursday, during which he announced that officials were working with the intelligence services and police to look at how and whether to “stop people communicating via these Web sites and services when we know they are plotting violence, disorder and criminality.”

i wonder if social media has been used to help co-ordinate the clean up efforts, protect shops, inform friends and relatives whether it is safe to move about.

anyone have pointers to stories like that?
After four nights of riots, Britain is weighing whether to block statements of violence on social media sites.

+Ivan Žužak: thanks for the update. good to see at least some evidence that people see social media as multi-variant (not just 'a bad thing') in this particular situation.

IMO, this 'knee-jerk' reaction to shut down avenues of communication at times of unrest is a terribly slippery slope that should be avoided in almost all cases.

of course, it's not my neighborhood that is in jeopardy right now, too.

"These numbers suggest, of course, that someone has broken a lottery game."

"It turns out, however, that problems with the state lottery system extend far beyond a few poorly designed scratchers. One of the most troubling things I discovered was a series of reports produced by the Massachusetts state auditor that documented a history of “non-random” payouts to a short list of individuals in the state"
Earlier this year, I wrote about Mohan Srivastava, a geological statistician who has cracked multiple scratch lottery tickets. This means that he can accurately

Don't forget to buy a 3 or 7 day pass for the "vaporetto" otherwise you'll be bound to walk miles just to cross over the canal :0

HTTP is not RPC [mca blog] #HTTP #REST #SOA <- a follow up to some twitter-convos.

"i had an interesting set of twitter convos in the last 24 hours centered around HTTP, RPC, and REST. i sespecially enjoyed my interactions w/@wmartinez, @dilipkrish and @AndrewWahbe."

_"
essentially, the convo gravitated toward the comparision of Fielding's REST to common RPC when implementing solutions over HTTP. along the way, (after a couple mis-steps called out by @dilipkrish) i said that i find it very interesting that RPC over HTTP is so popular/common when the two are so 'dissonant' to each other."_

RESTFest 2011 is just one week away...

"ExtendedTalks on tap for Saturday (Aug-20) AM from Subbu Allamaraju of eBay (Measuring REST), Randall Tombaugh of Microsoft (Web API: Bringing HTTP front and center in WCF), and Kev Burns, Jr (A Resource Oriented Hypermedia Framework). and, this year's Friday night (Aug-19) keynote (RESTLess: Why you should stop using REST) will be delivered by Jon Moore of Comcast. it should be a very interesting presentation and discussion afterwards!"
lots for me to do in order to be ready; really looking forward to seeing old friends an new faces, too.

"'[A] roadmap for how people can hide their identities' when making political contributions."

_"The company, W Spann LLC, was formed in March by a Boston lawyer who specializes in estate tax planning for “high net worth individuals,” according to corporate records and the lawyer’s bio on her firm’s website.
The corporate records provide no information about the owner of the firm, its address or its type of business."_
"Six weeks later, W Spann LLC made its million-dollar donation to Restore Our Future — a new so-called “super PAC” started by a group of former Romney political aides to boost the former Massachusetts governor’s presidential bid. It listed its address as being in a midtown Manhattan office building that has no record of such a tenant."
"The Boston lawyer, Cameron Casey, dissolved the company on July 12 — two weeks before Restore Our Future made its first campaign filing of the year reporting the donation from the now-nonexistent company, the corporate records show."
