THE BETTER COVENANT - PART TWO

Last week, I wrote a post to show that Christians have been called to a far better covenant than the old one God entered with the Hebrews.  I lamented that too many Christians do not realise the beauty of the new or understand their liberty in this better covenant.  Today, I want to look at THREE ways that Believers are stuck in the past, and why it is dangerous to the maturing of their faith in God.  In no particular order, here they are:

1. Christians are not the 12 tribes of Israel!

It seems many Churches are built on this ministry, to recreate the Church to look like Israel!  Why?  Is it for a lack of a pattern or guidance on what Christianity is to look like?  I think not.

Paul and Peter wrote enough in their Epistles for us to understand how different the make-up of the Church is to the Israelites.  For starters, among the Israelites, the Levites were set apart specially for God as Priests, and had no inheritance of their own, but received as their portion a tithe from the other tribes - which was given as unto God...

THE BETTER COVENANT

"But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.  For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second" (Heb 8:6-7).

I am grieved most times I ponder on organised Christianity today.  I am grieved, because most believers remind me too much of the Galatians Paul rebuked in his day.  I am grieved because it appears that many do not truly understand the better covenant that we have been called to.  So, they have shackled themselves again to the Law, when Christ has set them free.  In seeking to be justified by the Law, they put themselves again under condemnation, as Paul wrote:

"For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.  Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace" (Gal 5:3-4)

I don't know where the origin of the error is from, but it seems to be strongly connected to the belief that the Bible...

MY CASE FOR JESUS, THE WORD OF GOD AND THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

"You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life..." (John 5:39-40).

Jesus made this accusation to the Pharisees, but I believe that it could be said for much of Christianity today.  We do not seem to know the purpose of the Scriptures.  We hold them as sacred, yet do not understand the fundamental message of the Scriptures nor heed what it says.  My belief is that Christ is the Message...even from the very beginning.  Our Salvation through Christ Jesus was prepared for us, even before the foundation of the Earth was laid (Eph 1:4, Matt 25:34, Rev 13:8).

When Jesus made this accusation, he was referring to the Hebrew Scriptures, not the Christian Bible.  He said that He came to fulfil the Law and the Prophets (Matt 5:17).  The Hebrew Scriptures point us to Christ, and everything that happened before His coming prepared the ground for Christ to come.  When Christ came, on two recorded occasions, God spoke in an audible voice saying: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him"  (Matt 3:17; Mark 9:7)...

THE SPIRIT OF GOD

"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24).

Jesus tells us the very nature of God, and the nature of the worship true believers are to give to Him.  God is a Spirit.  What that tells me is that, God as a Spirit is One Complete God.  Even if He were to possess a body as a Spirit, or to take on another form, He is still essentially a Spirit.

I am no theologian, and don't plan to be one.  The doctrine of the Trinity is a doctrine I have always accepted as true, as a believer, and decided that it would be something God would explain to me in Heaven...how He can be both the Father and the Son.  This doctrine teaches that God has three forms...  That is Father (a human likeness), Son (a human form) and Holy Spirit (a spirit).  According to this doctrine, the three are One God, and individually God too.

The popular song, "Holy, Holy, Holy", by Reginald Heber, has at its climax "God in three persons, blessed Trinity".  However, I recently got a different understanding of this relationship, between God and Jesus and the Spirit they share...
