Samsung Galaxy Note 8 front glass panel shows a Galaxy S8-like bezel-less design

Samsung had announced that it won’t discontinue the Galaxy Note lineup even after the Galaxy Note 7 battery fiasco. The company plans to unveil the Galaxy Note 8 sometime later this year, but leaks have started flowing in already. A video of a 3D printed model of the smartphone made by a YouTuber surfaced earlier this week, hinting towards an in- screen fingerprint reader. Now, a new video posted on Twitter shows the alleged front glass panel of the Galaxy Note 8.

As you can see in the video, the glass panel of the Galaxy Note 8 looks quite similar to the Galaxy S8 and S8+, albeit slightly larger in size. If this turns out to be true, Samsung’s next flagship phablet will end up looking a lot like the Galaxy S8 and S8+, thanks to its bezel- free Infinity Display. However, you should take this video with a pinch of salt as it can be fake.

The Galaxy Note 8 is rumored to feature a 6.3- inch QHD display, a 12MP+13MP dual rear camera setup, and an in- screen fingerprint reader.

Motorola bewildered why Samsung didn't do eight-point battery checks prior to Note 7 fiasco

At a recent conference, Motorola battery engineer Russ Gyuenes made some remarks at Samsung's battery testing practices prior to the Galaxy Note 7's unfortunate fall from grace. If you can't recall, the Note 7 was pulled from the market last year when it turned out it had a defective battery prone to exploding.

Following its investigation, Samsung implemented an eight- point battery check system and shared it with the smartphone industry in the interest of consumers. The protocol involves enhanced tests (Durability Test, Visual Inspection, X- Ray Test, Disassembling Test and OCT Test), as well as newly applied measures (Charge and Discharge Test, TVOC Test and Accelerated Usage Test). Gyenes unabashedly stated that Motorola already had this process in place, and was bewildered why Samsung "weren't doing it before?"

Motorola has had its expertise in mobile battery technology since the advent of the cell phone – 1984's Motorola DynaTAC 8000X. Company representatives were called to testify as battery experts during Boeing's investigation into the safety of lithium- ion batteries for its 787 Dreamliner. Gyenes was compelled to share some details of Motorola's smartphone battery testing procedures, claiming its process would have identified issues with the Galaxy Note 7's battery early on in the making.

The workflow involves examining a battery unit's individial cell construction before it gets mass- produced. Additionally, suppliers' X- ray procedures are checked upon, and battery manufacturing partners are subjected to 118- question audits they must puss without a single mistake. That probably makes your economics exam seem like a cakewalk.

Although Russ Gyenes took the opportunity to directly tout Motorola's safety procedures as superior to Samsung's, he's coming from a personal place. As a high- level battery engineer, he has been "behind the scenes for years, asking why can't we sell safety." Following the Note 7 accident, public consciousness in smartphone battery safety was raised higher than it used to be. It's certainly not a discussion that's to be ceased, so any contribution to it helps empower users against potential harm.

Samsung announces the Z4, quite possibly 2017's most under-spec'd name brand phone

Following its appearance at the Wi- Fi Alliance for certification, the Samsung Z4 got its official announcement today. This is the latest smartphone to run the company's proprietary Tizen OS. Different builds of Tizen power many of Sammy's smart devices, including TV sets and smartwatches. It also runs on low- cost phones like the Z4 and its predecessors.

The Z4 is an entry- level smartphone for first- time users, which explains the ho- hum design and spec sheet. It's a device meant to demonstrate the essential mobile experience at the lowest agreeable cost. Thus, the Z4 gets a 4.5- inch, 480 x 800 resolution display (hard to believe these still exist, but they do), a quad- core chip, and 1GB of RAM. Not particularly impressive, but apparently enough to handle LTE Cat. 4 data speeds.

In addition, there are 5MP cameras with LED flash modules on the front and back, and the phone is powered by a 2050mAh battery. While Samsung is being super- economical with hardware, the Z4 does have everything a smartphone absolutely needs, and is going to make some first- time users very happy for a while.
Samsung doesn't want Tizen as its flagship OS... yet. As for the operating system, the phone runs Tizen 3.0 and its user interface is designed with straightforward usability as the primary goal. It makes sense not to overwhelm someone who's never used a phone before, right? Users can easily make shortcuts to features like voice commands, camera app, and other facilities by assigning physical buttons or coming up with swipe gestures. Speaking of the camera app, it offers some pleasing functionality like Auto Selfie (take photos by facial recognition) and Video Flip (capture front and rear camera views in a single video).

The Samsung Z4 will be sold in select countries, beginning with India. It will be offered in black, gold, and silver colors. Alas, the price hasn't been listed. Samsung will be showing it at the Tizen Developer Conference in SF next week, too. While not a poster child for the platform, the Z4 certainly has its place in developing markets. Besides, Samsung doesn't have much interest in pushing Tizen as an OS for flagship devices if it aims to keep business relations with Google tight.
