Let the winner quit his party and become an independent, says Sergey

I must confess, I am dreading today's elections.
Not because of who might win or lose.
Not because as a Californian, my vote for President will count 1/3 as much as an Alaskan (actually it won't matter at all -- I'm not in a swing state).
Not because my vote for Senate will count 1/50 as much as an Alaskan.

But because no matter what the outcome, our government will still be a giant bonfire of partisanship.  It is ironic since whenever I have met with our elected officials they are invariably thoughtful, well-meaning people.  And yet collectively 90% of their effort seems to be focused on how to stick it to the other party.

So my plea to the victors -- whoever they might be: please withdraw from your respective parties and govern as independents in name and in spirit.  It is probably the biggest contribution you can make to the country.

[If you agree, pass it on to your newly elected officials.]

Hi dreading?
Your volk needs a direct democracy in peace. Rely on the power of the mass that want to make in on their one.

Morrissey on his lengthy absence:

You haven't had a record deal for seven years. I find that hard to believe. In my mind I think of you as a superstar.

Well, so do I. There's an amazing number of people who don't. And most of them have high-power positions at major record labels.

+Julio Rodriguez I think Windows 8 is a hedge, since it still keeps the Windows 7 user interface as an option underneath, but many of the new features won't be exploited unless you use it on a touch-enabled device.  So desktop power-users are still served, but they won't get a slew of new features tailored for them.

Thoughtful, empirical and savvy piece on how tech doesn't really revert to the mean -- it implodes or grows.

It all depends on whether competitors of the iPhone can put out products that over-match its speed and capabilities.  I think of it this way: the iPhone has built the market into something much larger than what it might have been.  With the technology available, it would not be too difficult for RIM, Nokia, others to come up to speed and even beat the iPhone on price.  The iPhone has made Apple a huge target, and the larger they are, the harder they fall.

Me about one of the more absurd RIM comparisons -- to Nortel.

Might be worth checking if TSX market cap surged in the RIM era because of natural resource stocks. If so, this would have keep RIM's percentage of the market down.

From a new paper, this on stocks, gambling and lotteries:

In Germany, individual-level transaction records from a discount broker show that retail investors are significantly less likely to trade in the stock market during weeks with larger prizes in the German national lottery.

Paul, if the pattern is noticeable among the traditionally frugal Germans, I wonder, how much more among other groups (~;

I wonder if Iranian news or govt cares that it's false? Most Iranians will never know. Even if they knew it was false they may have still printed it anyway.
