My son has been at Carlton Academy for a couple years. Over that time there has been several small issues, but nothing that would prompt me to write a review or condemn the school to a one star rating. Things like very high turnover rate, poorly trained low paid staff or cleanliness. You see most of those issues in most other day schools and Carlton is no different. However a few months back I was home and getting my son ready for a bath. As I took off his shirt I discovered that my sons entire left side was bruised like he was in a street fight. Keep in mind he is 4 years old. When I asked him what happened he tells me that there are kids that are torturing him. I asked him if he told the teachers, he tells me that they ignore him and tell him he's lying. The next day I go into the school and inform the school of the situation. I even showed them pictures of the bruises on his body. At first they seemed really concerned and tell me that they are going to look into right away. The next day they call me in for a meeting and when I sit down I'm expecting to hear the outcome and what they are going to do about it. Instead I hear that they interrogated my 4 year old son and say they think he is just being a problem child. They also tell me that they "uncovered" some questionable things that my son said. They told me he was talking about death. On a side note, I asked my son about the death comment later and he said he was talking about the video game he was playing and they made him die in the game by talking to him. I sat in this meeting in shock wondering what this all had to do with the bruises on my son. The next day after the meeting I was dropping off my son in his classroom, and one of the teachers starts giving me an attitude. I left and just laughed it off. Later that day his grandmother picks him up from school and the same teacher who neglected my son (and gave me an attitude) was now giving an attitude to his 70 year old grandmother. I went to the management and explained to them what was now going on and never heard from them. Needless to say we decided it was best to move to a new school. This opened up a whole new host of issues. Based on the schools policy, you must give one months notice in writing. Which seemed a bit long, but I still wanted to follow their policy. We gave notice in writing and that same day the owners wife calls me. She's clearly angry on the phone and very confrontational, but indirectly. Then a week and a half later I get an email from the owner Michael. He says there's a problem with my letter format and need to submit a new letter and the clock starts over and we supposedly owe more money. Clearly that was a feeble attempt to extort extra money, but we still complied since my son was there still and I didn't want to create any further issues for him. Finally it was the last week and my son had only three days left. That morning I get another email from Michael saying that I had an outstanding balance of $17 and if it wasn't paid today that my son will be kicked out and they will purse further action. Funny thing about this was that I paid in advance and had a bill showing I was paid in full. So I leave work and drop off the money. I send Michael a reply email letting him know that I paid the $17 asking him to not threaten my son and family with termination so the last three days just would go smooth. Well that prompted Micheal to threaten me with a slander law suit and tell me we were terminated effective now. So needless to say that I would not recommend this school to anyone. I've read other positive reviews which seem to be written by their management. But if you are looking for a school to abuse you and your child, well Carlton may be the place for you. Also they don't really follow a curriculum. They will tell you they do, but really they just let the kids play all day. My son was in their VPK class and now is behind in his new VPK class.

As both a parent and Director of the school, I am proud to be a part of Carlton Academy. I have been with the school since before it even opened in January 2008 after leaving a large franchised Preschool. It was a huge risk leaving the comfort of a major corporation, but one I was willing to make. Carlton Academy gave me the opportunity to help create a school where our passion for quality care and education is a priority. My daughter was lucky enough to join Carlton at 4 months (she's now 2) and is ahead of the curve in several developmental and academic areas, as are most of the students in her class. Our students are treated as family, not just another "number" on the roster, and I am honored to be able to get to know each and every family personally.

I wished we had listened to some of the other reviews before we took our child to this place. I have never had a more horrible experience with a daycare. They will not heat your childs food if you bring it from home, nor wash utensils from home. My child came home SEVERAL times a WEEK with new bruises or scrapes. My child had bite marks a couple times. I never was told about them, noticed them myself. When I told the management about the bitemarks, the response was their daycare does not have biters. Most importantly, my child was sick just about every week. He had temperatures of 103-104 almost weekly. We had to stay out of work so much when he was in this daycare. I have had my child at another daycare for a few months now. Not one time has he been sick. He does not cry anymore when we drop him off at daycare. One time I went to pick up my child from Carlton. I had to change my childs diaper, so I used the changing table there. It was filthy. Dust and crumbs were all down the hinges. The class was outside at the time. The floor and table was disgusting, smashed food everywhere. At our new childcare facility, we never find that - the teachers are always cleaning. Also, the teachers at Carlton were not good at communicating. We never got any insight into how our child was doing when we asked. We always felt the majority of the teachers (in his classroom) were there to do a job and did not care like they should. I will say, for a positive, my child did learn a lot of songs. And maybe some other things. But, that is the only positive thing I can say. Also, when I pulled my child from this daycare, the owner threatened to sue us if we posted negative comments about them. Please think long and hard before choosing this daycare. I wish I did.

FatherofOne is 100% accurate. Add to these concerns that they take advantage of every oportunity to chargeyou with unexpected "fees." and this can quickly become a nightmare, especially because they make you give them your banking information and they just withdraw whatever fees they assess without telling you. If you choose to pay by check, they charge you $15. for that privilege (not if bounces, mind you - just to use the check - for each check you pay an extra $15.) This month, ex-spouse didn't pay his half on time so on the 4th, they charged ME $50. On the fourth. I paid his half the next morning when I found out it on the 5th (with a check, so it was $65.00 for payment by check on the fourth; the fourth, people.) It's kind of comical.

First I will mention the bad. There does appear to be staffing issues and the wages paid could very well be to blame. It may also stem from lack of support for the staff. Whatever the case may be, I have personally seen at least two wonderful teachers leave. Fortunately, they were replaced by two excellent teachers! Other than staffing issues, I have no qualms with this facility, I think it is clean, full of activities, and I never see a child being left alone to fend for themselves. I searched all over Tampa for a childcare facility and looked at all the facilities recommended by various people. Suffice to say that the things I saw going on at other facilities went beyond staffing issues. I saw places that reminded me of the book "Lord of the Flies". Children ignored and sleeping in corners when it was clearly not nap time. No structure to speak of and teachers that only paid attention to children to punish them. This place is a dream compared to all of that. My son did get sick for about 4 months all at once when he first attended. I was informed by many doctors that this is normal and can last up to a year. Sad, but true. The immune system has to be built up at some point. I do believe that hand-washing could be implemented a little bit more often. Regarding the webcams, I am wondering how they are a gimmick. I really enjoy using the webcams. I don't know if anyone else has bothered to spend a day and check in on their child periodically, but I had a blast using it. Granted, I don't use it as often as I should, but it is nice to know that it is there. So is this place perfect? No, but it is definitely better than the average facility, especially when you compare facilities that fall within $75 price range of Carlton Academy. I would love to know what these places are that the negative reviews found better for their child. It would be nice to check them out and see what type of facility they are seeking for their child. That might give others reading reviews a better idea of what to look out for. Just my two bits, I think this place is nice, not perfect, but definitely better than anything else I have seen.
