Stephen Harper's government is cutting more than $100 million in funding from the federal department in charge of protecting Canada's water and oceans. As tar sands production increases and more oil is shipped over bodies of water, there is a need for more funding to watch, protect and research Canadian waterways. Follow the link to see how these cuts will effect environmental protection in Canada. http://o.canada.com/technology/environment/harper-government-cutting-more-than-100-million-related-to-protection-of-water/

In her first blog post on The Root Word, Kayla Henson writes about the phony SFI eco-label: "I’ve seen with my own eyes what SFI does to forests and wildlife habitat and it breaks my heart."

The SFI label is anything but green...Will you join us in spreading the word?

BREAKING NEWS: ForestEthics Advocacy is standing up to the Harper government’s bullying and silencing of opponents of #tarsands expansion and pipelines. Today they announced they’re suing the federal government of Canada over changes made by the Harper gov’t that violate Canadians’ right to free speech and put our natural environment at risk.

Canadians deserve to have a voice in dirty energy projects like the +Enbridge Inc. Line 9B pipeline project or the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain twinning proposal. ForestEthics Advocacy is standing up for these rights. Stand with them and protect your right to speak up! SHARE or +1 this post! http://bit.ly/1cIEwzE

Our hearts go out to those affected by the flooding in Alberta, Canada.

The upside of tragedy and loss? It can bring out the best in people. A huge thanks to all the volunteers who are helping Albertans.

From The Root Word Blog: "Seeing the Light: Province of British Columbia Joins Opposition to Proposed #enbridge Pipeline" http://bit.ly/18F7H1Z

Amanda Follett writes: "Unfortunately, the province doesn’t have the final say. Neither does the panel reviewing the proposal. That was taken away months ago by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who has decided his Conservative government should determine the fate of BC’s coastline. But this most recent development proves that when citizens shout loud enough, there may be a light at the end of the pipeline."

Ever wonder what it's like to go up against your country's federal government? Canadian Donna Sinclair, co-plaintiff in ForestEthics Advocacy's lawsuit against new National Energy Board rules, does. In the latest post from The Root Word, Donna describes how she made the tough and courageous decision to stand up for her right to speak out about tar sands proposals -- and what it's been like since the announcement. Read and SHARE her story!

Awesome - very good to see this happening. We need to challenge Harper's regime on any and all levels still available to us before he shuts down EVERY avenue for dissent. Too bad all of our overpaid jellyfish MPs, Senators, etc. don't step up and put a stop to the blatant attempts at the reduction of freedom of speech and any/all other democratic right abuses that this government keeps spending it's time instituting.

If you love fresh water, clean air, and caribou with their fuzzy antlers, then you probably love Canada's vast Boreal forest. But it needs on-the-ground protection from clearcuts and tar sands development....urgently.

Today, a group of international scientists is calling for 50% of Canada's Boreal forest to be protected from ANY type of development. Their report echos many parts of the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement (CBFA), which ForestEthics, seven other nonprofits and 21 logging companies signed in 2010.

BREAKING: TransMountain pipeline operated by energy giant Kinder Morgan spills oil in the town of Merritt in southwestern British Columbia. The amount of crude spilled is still unknown. http://www.forestethics.org/news/kinder-morgan-oil-spill-merritt-bc-premier-should-reject-both-pipelines

The Premier of British Columbia recently rejected Enbridge's Northern Gateway application to punch a pipeline through her province. Will she do the same when Kinder Morgan applies to twin its TransMountain pipeline? We sure hope so. Here's the thing about pipelines: THEY BREAK! #tarsands

Definitely agree that we need to halt building more pipelines until better solutions have been found to protect the environment from leaks or spills!! Money needs to be put into searching for better methods before they build more resulting in multiplying the damage!! We also need to stop the damage from use of the fracking process as well!! There has to be better options!!

The Miami Herald: "ForestEthics group: ‘Green’ seal not worth paper it’s printed on" http://hrld.us/175mo0e

"An environmental group, ForestEthics, plans to file a complaint Wednesday with the [US] Federal Trade Commission that says one of the largest organizations that certify forestry practices misleads consumers about the sources of the products that carry its seal of approval.

The complaint argues that the Sustainable Forestry Initiative’s claim that it’s an independent, nonprofit public charity is deceptive and misleading because it’s 'substantially governed and financed by the timber industry.'"

+1 if you don't like what the #greenwashing SFI eco-label does to our forests, and the people and critters that depend on them.

Because protecting forests is everyone's business
Introduction
ForestEthics is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting Endangered Forests and wild places, wildlife, and human well-being. Our innovative market-based campaign strategy has transformed industries, and helped secure the protection of more than 65 million acres of Endangered Forest.

Founded in 2000, we're based in San Francisco, California, Bellingham, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Recently, the Canadian government has been conducting an unprecedented dismantling of environmental laws — heavily scrutinizing environmental groups, and trying to limit the public’s ability to advocate strongly against those changes. In response, we created two independent nonprofit entities in Canada, ForestEthics Solutions Society and ForestEthics Advocacy Association, in April 2012.
