According to a 2010 interview uncovered by Time Magazine, model and the face of the anti-vaccine movement, Jenny McCarthy was knowingly spreading incorrect information regarding her son's medical diagnosis, and her claim that his symptoms were caused by vaccines. Her actions are harmful to all parents of children with autism who want professionals to take their concerns and observations about their children seriously. It is also damaging to the many thousands of children whise who trusted Ms. McCarthy and were not vaccinated against MMR, and developed measles or mumps as a result. The number of those children with lasting neurological damage as a result of those infections is unknown.

According to her interview, her son Evan was initially diagnosed with autism at UCLA in 2005. He had severe seizures and lost language. It is common for Kandau Kleffner epilepsy to be misdiagnosed as autism because a few of the symptoms are similar and it is very rare. Ms. McCarthy states she was very persistent in finding answers to his condition. She discovered he actually has Landau Kleffner (LKS) syndrome, a type of focal epilepsy with speech disorder of childhood-onset. It is sometimes called epileptic aphasia. Children with LKS may have autism features, but it is not a form of autism, and typically have intellectual disability. LKS is an inflammatory brain disorder In which children lose speech as in some forms of autism and develop epileptic seizures. The symptoms are usually severe. LKS is a dominant genetic disorder with incomp, ete penetrance caused by a mutation in GRIN2A on Chromosome16p13.2. There is no indication it is related to vaccines. When her son was treated for his epilepsy his symptoms subsided. Ms. McCarthy has not withdrawn her claim that vaccines cause autism. She now days he was not misdisgonsed with autism before receiving the correct diagnosis, however she acknowledges that it isnt certain vaccines caused his condition and that more research should be conducted. She has made a career presenting hersself as a persistent "Momma Bear" protecting her child from harmful vaccines, when in fact it appears she was becoming very wealthy based on spreading harmful misinformation. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/25/jenny-mccarthy-in-time-i_n_476881.html

Autism Treatment updates:  New studies: one uses automated visual sampling of  behavior, possibly permitting earlier diagnosis and treatment.  Useful remote geographic areas.  Another study detects ASD as early as six months of age using eye gaze, and a third shows girls protected against autism, may provide clues to preventing autism. Happy Birthday to Autism Speaks. http://www.travisithompson.net

Good morning, my Autism Treatment website update includes an article on Folic Acid and autism, a study on oxytocin and indications of anxiety in ASD (clue, it isn’t easy to diagnose!).   A link to my recent review article in JARID.  Happy Birthday to Hans Asperger who would turn 107 if he were still with us.  I have a new Parent Perspective article coming from the UK shortly. http://www.travisithompson.net

Dear colleagues, you may be interested in this article about the history and controversies surrounding autism. It has been a very long time coming.

Volume 26, Issue 2, pages 81–107, March 2013. DOI: 10.1111/jar.12021. From the Editor: Professor Thompson’s scholarly article reviews what is known about autism. He tracks the origins of the two approaches to early intervention and argues cogently that the time for battling is long past.
