Summer Hat Sale
There are a few reasons I stopped writing essays on my blog. One, I got paranoid. I follow a lot of women scientists on Twitter. Every time they express an opinion they get attacked by horrible trolls. I thank my staggering unpopularity this hasn't happened...

Everglades Challenge 2015
My brother Harry called me yesterday morning from his car on the way to St. Petersburg for the Everglades Challenge. We hadn't really spoken much lately, but that's normal. He said he'd been really busy at work and hadn't had time to get ready. He piled eve...

My Best Inventions of 2014
It's the last day of the year, time for my 2nd annual list of the best things I invented in the last 12 months. I guess my life is pretty settled because I can't think of anything I invented this year. I'm still enjoying last year's best invention, the clos...

Today's science event is Philae attempting to land on a comet. I woke up and turned on the live stream immediately. It was a lot of old white men with cool European accents who sounded like they were reading the Acknowledgements out of the front of their bo...

Buck Rivet Report: Under Construction
| Start at the Beginning | In January of 2012 I bought two Spartan Royal Mansions, 31 foot long mobile homes built by the Spartan Aircraft Company. One was a 1951 model at a North Florida second hand store about 50 miles away. It was missing an entire axle....

Shopping: 1951 Royal Mansion
In January 2012 I was talking to a friend online about trailers. This friend is in Austin, where trailers are trendy and cool. He'd toyed with the idea of getting a vintage trailer to live in. I wondered if we should pick up a trailer in the Florida Panhand...

What is Home?
Yesterday on Twitter Astronaut Ron Garan retweeted a fancy script font image that read, "Home is where love resides, memories are created, friends always belong, and laughter never ends." What? No it's not. I have seen platitudes like this my whole life and...

Orion EFT-1 Launch
I got in my car and drove about 5 hours last Wednesday to go see a Delta IV Heavy rocket launch from Cape Canaveral. That's the biggest, fastest rocket currently available to launch things into space. It was launching the test setup of the Orion capsule. ( ...

Decide to Buy
After looking at these two dilapidated old trailers I had to decide what to do. I had enough money saved up to buy them. I had a place to put them. But I knew it would be a hell of a lot of work to fix them. It was just so compelling that there were TWO of ...

Shopping: 1949 Royal Mansion
The other Spartan for sale in my local Craigslist area was in Blountstown, FL. I used to drive through there all the time when I worked for FDEP Beaches. It's on the Appalachicola River. It's a nice drive, so I arranged to go see it the next day. First look...

Table Manners: A Short Story
“God, honey, it’s disgusting!” “What?” he said. “My father! He sounds like a turtle chewing a hard boiled egg! There’s more couscous lodged in his wrinkles than he managed to swallow! One Labrador isn’t going to cut it. We’re going to need to get a terrier ...

Introduction
When my eye doctor told me I had Spasms of Accommodation it became a metaphor for my life. It is an opthalmic condition where the muscles in the eye are constantly contracting, trying to make things more in focus than they really are. I have science degrees in physics and oceanography. I appreciate the balance of nature and I embrace technology. I am a hermit in a tiny house in the longleaf woods of the Gulf Coastal Plain. I take pictures and build things and write essays on my blog. I like high quality objects that can be cleaned up and repurposed.
