One of the greatest celebrations of Christianity is Easter. Faithful Christians following the customs and traditions of the country prepare themselves and their houses to receive the blessing of the Holy Resurrection. It is always a fascinating time of the year since Easter is always in spring, the most joyful season of the year.
Easter (Pascha) begins on the Saturday of Lazarus, the Saturday before Palm Sunday, with children decorating baskets with lots of flowers in order to walk around their neighborhoods and sing ‘The Lazarina Carols’. In return, they either receive dyed eggs, money or other foods from the housewives or the owners of shops. From that day on, people gather in churches every evening throughout Holy Week. Each night they listen to different Gospels and Hymns that narrate Christ’s Passion leading to his crucifixion.
Holy Thursday is a very special day. Women dye eggs red and bake tsoureki a kind of brioche bread and Easter Koulourakia, sweet butter-based pastry. The eggs are essential ingredients of these desserts. Eggs are a symbol of life and red is the color of life. In the evening of the same day, after the readings of the 12 Gospels, in most parts of Greece, children undertake the decoration of the Epitaphios with garlands of flowers, so that in the morning of Good Friday it is ready to receive the image of the body of Christ when He is taken down from the Cross.
Good Friday is a day of sorrow and contemplation. Church bells ring in a mournful manner all day long. Late at night, in the middle of the evening Divine Liturgy, the Epitaphios is carried through the town or village. A band or choir playing or singing solemn music precedes the procession; they are followed by the cantors, the clergy, women bearing myrrh, the altar boys carrying the liturgical fans, scouts and guides, and the people of the region, who sing the hymns throughout the procession. All along its route, people scatter flowers and perfumes on the Epitaphios, holding lit candles in their hands. The proession returns to the church, and it’s then that the first Resurrectiontakes place. On Saturday morning, in the town center there are various events happening like the ‘Kommati’ where people throw and break pottery and lots of firecrackers to announce the forthcoming Easter miracle.
