SA TORRE, AN ESTATE FULL OF HISTORY
Did you know that the history of the Sa Torre estate goes back to the end of the 14th century, when it was bestowed upon the Febrer family by King James. We know that in 1381, it was owned by the young nobleman, Bernardo Febrer, and that its ownership then passed to Catalina de Mora, wife of Pedro Tornamira, alias de Mora, also a nobleman, and subsequently to Pereta de Mora y Santa Cilia, wife of Lorenzo de Marí, alias de Santa Cilia. As from 1540, its possession was passed to the ancestors of the Villalonga family, who owned it until its recent purchase by the current owners.
It is said that Sa Torre was the most treasured possession of DoñaCatalina Tomás Zaforteza Togores I Denti, “la Gran Cristiana” (the Great Christian). In the 19th century, this Majorcan noblewoman could go right around the island without leaving her property, where she received kings and princes from all over the Mediterranean. She owned both the Sa Torre and the nearby San Granada estates, together totalling 8,000 cuarteradas (6,400 hectares), an entirely unheard-of area in Mallorca.
So many generations have lived on the estate that its historic
wealth is undisputable. The facilities currently occupy an area of
50,000 square meters, which includes the manor house and a large patio that grants access to the tower in which the hotel’s mainentrance is located; it also has swimming pools, a football pitch, tennis courts and extensive gardens that make guests feel they are in the middle of the countryside. The restoration of the estate for construction of the hotel has been performed in such a way as to combine the traditional character of Majorcan architecture with the modernity distinctive of a first-rate establishment.
