The inaugural $100K Bell Labs Prize went to Princeton Professor Emmanuel Abbe for his proposal "A Shannon Theory of Social Networks and Beyond." I participated on the awesomely diverse finalist judging panel that included a Nobel Laureate, two CEO's, the President of Bell Labs, a journalist, a media guru and an amazing young entrepreneur from South Africa, Siya Xuza, who amongst other honors has a small planet name after him. Nearly 500 proposals were initially submitted for consideration for this new prize. Seven finalists made it to the last round.
From a group of seven finalists, Emmanuel Abbe, assistant professor at Princeton University, has won the inaugural Bell Labs Prize. Having presented their work on December 9th, contestants vied for cash prizes as well as the opportunity to develop their ideas with researchers at Bell Labs.
