I love writing about ways that travelers can connect with local people and their cultures while they are visiting an unfamiliar destination. This might be a foreign country or a nearby city. In my articles, I provide readers with information they can use to wander off the beaten path instead of following the well-worn trail of tourist sites.

What could be more authentic than traveling to another country to lend a hand in a local community? More enlightening than stepping into the Third World? More satisfying than making a meaningful contribution? http://bit.ly/15NHx0s #ALT #Voluntourism

Most #SantaBarbara visitors can be found coming off of tour buses at Mission Santa Barbara, but El Presidio de Santa Barbara is just as exciting. Built by the Spanish in 1782, this location is rarely crowded, within walking distance, and free.
BONUS: There’s a great deli and lounge directly across the street from the Presidio called 3 Pickles and the Pickle Room. They serve delicious sandwiches and unique cocktails, but try an order of their unique fried rice! http://bit.ly/1THZnaR #ALT

What makes Shell Beach the perfect spot for a #summer #vacation? Great weather and a relatively laid-back atmosphere. Further north, coastal fog can be a problem, and in some areas to the south, beach resorts are packed in cheek-to-jowl. But this area, which is the upmarket resort area of Pismo Beach, feels quiet and secluded. http://bit.ly/2bXje77 #ShellBeach #AuthenticLuxuryTravel #ALT

Hotel du Palais Imperial Resort & Spa in Biarritz, #France, is located on a headland between two beautiful beaches. Considered a national monument, the hotel opened in 1893. Known for its surf scene, #Biarritz is a resort town on the Atlantic coast near the border with Spain. #Christchurch accommodation comes in all shapes and sizes, but Otahuna Lodge is easily the most #romantic. The stately Victorian mansion is surrounded by 30 acres of beautiful gardens, emerald green lawns, and fragrant woodlands. http://bit.ly/1QASNNY #NewZealand #AuthenticLuxuryTravel #ALT

#Monterey is a mixed bag. At first glance, it’s not very exciting. The commercial district is chockablock with the predictable chain stores, and nearby lodging and dining options are also ho-hum. So why am I writing about this Central California city? Because the flip side is that Monterey is home to some of the best food, most authentic wildlife experiences, and interesting history in the state. You just have to know where to look — so read on. http://bit.ly/2caClHS #AuthenticLuxuryTravel #ALT
