I love writing about ways that travelers can connect with local people and their cultures while they are visiting an unfamiliar destination. This might be a foreign country or a nearby city. In my articles, I provide readers with information they can use to wander off the beaten path instead of following the well-worn trail of tourist sites.

Although the #Denali mountain range is visible from Anchorage, you don’t start getting your jaw-dropping views of the Great One until you come into Willow or Talkeetna — about an hour and a half to two hours drive north. (Denali View North is a rest-stop along the way that offers beautiful panoramic views overlooking the valley and the mountain range.) #ALT #Alaska

#Cruise ships are fun for families and provide many conveniences, but – in my opinion – they don’t really qualify as Authentic Luxury Travel. The ports that cruise ships visit are crowded with tourists, and the short stay in each place precludes any real contact with the local culture. However, I do know of one ship that allows passengers to visit exotic destinations in an authentic way. #TheWorld is a floating community of 165 #luxury apartments that moves continuously around the globe on an itinerary that includes stays of up to five days in some ports and expeditions to places as remote as Greenland and Antarctica. #ALT

What I learned is that #RovosRail Journey on the #PrideofAfrica is one of the most luxurious #train trips in the world and that the historic cars attempt to capture the #romance of a bygone era. I also found out that Rovos is known for attention to detail and great service. The spacious suites all have ensuite bathrooms and air conditioning. In addition, the train travels at a maximum speed of 60km (36 miles) per hour for comfort and good viewing. http://bit.ly/2rc8Krv #ALT #Luxury

In addition to writing about travel, I also help travelers plan their trips. Of course, I can only do this if I am well acquainted with their destination. I was working with a couple on their trip to Italy when the husband had a change of heart — now they were going to #Amsterdam. Since I haven’t been to The #Netherlands in ages, I turned to my extremely travel savvy colleagues in the Society of American Travel Writers. My request resulted in a treasure-trove of good advice. #ALT
