RHINO HORN HAS NO MEDICINAL PROPERTIES WHATSOEVER!
Rhino horns are made of keratin, the same material that makes up your hair and fingernails and using rhino horn for medicinal purposes have the same effect on you as biting your nails or eating your own hair!
Please help us protect these beautiful animals! At the current rate of poaching, rhinos will be extinct within a few years.

ABOUT TIME
BUT MORE SHOULD BE SHOWN TO THE VIETNAMESE!
A number of Vietnamese celebrities have been involved in a Stop Using Rhino Horn campaign to raise awareness of the rhino horn crisis and urge people to stop consuming this product because “when the buying stops, the killing can too”.

"Lion on Alert" - THREATENED THURSDAY
African Lion
Etosha National Park, Namibia

Few things beat good light on a good-looking lion. This young male was gazing attentively at a giraffe that was approaching from the direction of the setting sun.

Lion numbers are plummeting!!! They may become extinct in the wild in our lifetime!

(Text courtesy of www.lionaid.org)
Over the past 50 years Africa's lion populations have plummeted from over 200,000 individuals back in the 1960's to fewer than 25,000 today. A shocking number if you consider the size of that continent, and by far the greatest number of remaining lion populations are small, scattered, and highly vulnerable.

There have been many conservation foundations working to improve the lot of the African lion, but sadly to date the declines have not abated. In fact the rate of decline in lion numbers is accelerating. Ghana, Coted’Ivoire, and Congo are the latest African countries added to long list that have lost all their lions, and Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda predict local extinctions in the next ten years.

While many factors are listed as contributory to the overall decline in lion population numbers (including loss of habitat, conflict with growing human and livestock populations, declines in the number of functioning protected areas, etc), trophy hunting is a highly significant and immediately preventable source of additive mortality. The CITES Trade Database lists a total of 6,652 lion trophies exported 2000-2009, virtually all males. This number very likely exceeds lions killed as "problem" animals due to livestock and human attacks: as one example, between 1992 and 1998, 135 lions were reportedly killed as problem animals in northern Botswana. During that same time, 198 trophies were exported from the same area. Lion trophy hunting is not a sustainable practice, does not comply with CITES and EC WTR regulations that trade should not negatively affect species’ conservation status, and should be abolished.

Besides this - demand from China and other Asian countries for lion and tiger bones for bogus medicinal purposes is also rising higher and higher! Education must go forth to these nations and this must be stopped!

"Surreal Visitation"
Southern Black Rhino and Calf
Somewhere in Africa

Good morning! It's time for Google+ to see your wildlife photos again...yes, it's Wildlife Wednesday time. Dig up any photos of wild critters you've photographed on your travels and post them to the theme using the hashtag #WildlifeWednesday . As a bonus, if you can post animals with their young ones (like I have here), you get a bigger smile and a virtual high-5! +Mike Spinak created this theme and I help him curate.

This was a surreal moment. We were almost about to leave this particular waterhole to retire to our camp for the night, when this critically endangered mother and her young one gingerly approached and quenched their thirst under a stormy sky. Over 84 rhinos have been ruthlessly poached and slaughtered in 2014 for their horn in South Africa, while over 1000 were lost in 2013.

Please Mr. Boswell for WILDLIFE WEDNESDAY

Boswell, the chap on the right, performed a little circus act to retrieve the branch at his feet.  The other cheeky little guy wants to partake in Boswell's feast.  Boswell will not tolerate his nonsense.  End of story.  It's good to be the king of Mana Pools ;)

Share a photo of an endangered species with our #ThreatenedThursday theme!
Introduction
#ThreatenedThursday daily theme is curated by:

With many animals, reptiles and plants facing extinction, #ThreatenedThursday is your opportunity to share your photos of endangered and threatened species.  A theme to document the endangered flora and fauna of the world, it is aimed at spreading awareness about species which are at risk of extinction due to our actions or other reasons such as habitat loss, climate change, etc. Please tag your posts with #ThreatenedThursday.  We also welcome you to add a narrative if you have information about the species your photo is showcasing.
We are looking forward to taking a step towards spreading the word about conservation on G+, for those without a voice but who need our help to survive.

For a complete list of threatened species, please refer to these websites:  http://www.iucnredlist.org/ and  www.earthsendangered.com

For our wildlife "we are both their greatest enemy and their only hope.
These wonderful creatures will not argue their case.
They will not put up a fight.
They will not beg for reprieve.
They will not say goodbye.
They will not cry out.
They will just vanish.
And after they are gone there will be silence.
And there will be stillness.
And there will be empty places.
And nothing you can say will change this.
Nothing you can do will bring them back.
Their future is entirely in our hands."
