I hear a number of people that say Ham Radio is dead.  Well take a look at this chart showing the growth of the CQ World Wide contest.

Sept. 7-8 North America SOTA activity weekend, I am hoping to put out a couple of 10 point summits this weekend!

From W4ZV:
For some reason this event seems to be under-publicized here. The event is loosely scheduled for both days of the weekend of 7-8 September, with most activity during daylight in North American locations.

During the recent W7 activity weekend (2-4 August), something over 500 points was available during the weekend, so the full NA weekend should be even better! This is because of more participation from all NA regions with better seasonal propagation to Europe (and other continents).

I've run a propagation forecast using HamCAP assuming the current SSN of 58, and 10 Watts to dipoles on both ends of the W4 to DL path. The optimum times (for SNR = 10 dB or better) for propagation by band are:

Band UTC SNR (dB)

20m 1030-1330 11-16 (peak 1130-1230)
17m 1230-1430 13
15m 1330-1500 13
17m 1530-1930 10-11 (peak 1630-1730)
20m 1730-2230 12-18 (peak 1930-2030)

Unfortunately there appears to be little possibility of 12m propagation unless we get an unexpected increase in solar activity. If that were to happen a short peak might be possible from 1330-1430.

Some here may overnight to take advantage of the early 20m opening to Europe (1030 UTC is 6:30 AM local Eastern time), so be alert for early activity even though the start time is publicized as "about" 1200 UTC on 7 September.

Because seasonal propagation is much better than it was during the late July FOBB event, I believe this one will be MUCH better for EU<>NA QSOs.

73 & Good Luck!

Using a coil and brass whip that can tune from 7 - 28MHz.  May be looking at a magnetic loop at some point.

FT-817, check; couple of back pack antennas, check; VX-8DR for APRS, check; extra batteries, check; time off of work to get to the mountains of NC?  working on it.  I may do a couple of lower summits for practice.  I also have an FT 857 is I am feeling brisk.

I would be interested in knowing what people use for backpacks (mainly interested in day or weekend packs where I can bring a tent), and ESPECIALLY what boots you are using!!  The non radio items are just as, if not more important.

We arrived late. There was no one at the desk. Even after ringing the bell no one came. Had to call them to come to the door. It looked like she was sleeping. Finally got checked in and when I got to the room I realized that they did not give us the access code for internet. I was too tired to ask for it, so I used data on my phone. When we drove up and saw the pool we both laughed. It looked like a large bath tub! LOL The bed was very comfortable but it could be we were very tired. They need to step it up here!

This USED to be our go to place! We even had our first date there. On the anniversary of our first date, I booked the same table that we sat at, 2 weeks in advance. When we got there, we were seated at a different table. They told me someone else had booked it. The hostess tried to blame us for the problem!! REALLY?? **Strike 1! We ordered a bottle of wine. They were out. Understandable but **Strike 2! Placed an order for an appetizer. Waitress came back and said they were out. **Strike 3 Ordered our meal. My girlfriends order was also out. (This was at 7PM, not real late) We said sorry but we are going to leave. Someone from the kitchen came out to try to keep us there. Not one "I am sorry" or is ther something I could do to make your dining better, nothing. Never again! It is totally off our list from now on! Pity. We did have some good times there, but it was to the point that we asked if there was a change in management!

Jonathon and his crew worked very closely with me on my case. They provided prompt responses and cover all of the details, even when I was out of town on business. Jonathon listens closely and really comes through for you. I would not hesitate to recommend him!

WOW, what a disappointment. I set up reservations expecting this to be our best dinner of our trip to NYC. We felt extremely rushed and he waitress hardly even looked at us. My wife ordered the lobster dish and I ordered the halibut the was to be prepared at the table. The lobster dish was BORING. The sauce WAY overpowered the lobster so that you could not even taste the lobster. All we could taste was the sauce. My halibut.. I ordered it expecting the display since it was to be prepared at the table. Basically some guy from the kitchen came out and stirred the fish and rice.. WO HOOO... not. And this was THE most boring dish I think I have ever ate. WAY overrated and overpriced! VERY disappointed!

These people are dumb as a bag of rusty hammers. My mail comes late sometimes a month late, you cant get anyone on the phone, and any action they say will take never happens.
