In 200 B.C, Vatasayana asserted Hindustani Classical Music to be a total and unique assimilation of three aspects:
Geetam: Vocal music i.e an expression of emotions through tune (vocal).
Vadyam: Percussion instrument music for the rythmic values of music.
Nrityam: Dance- visualization with different physical or organic movements.

Musicologists believe that Hindustani Classical Music is originated from natural sounds, such as the cry of a peacock which became the Swara note Sa or Shadja. The voice of a Chatak (Rain bird) gave the Swara Re or Rishabh. The call of a Goat yielded the Swara Ga or Gandhara. The crowing of a crow became the Swara Ma or Madhyama. The sound of a cuckoo became the Swara Pa or Pancham. The sound of a frog was considered the Swara Dha or Dhaivata. The trumpeting of an elephant became the Swara Ni or Nishaada.

The distinctive style of Itawah Gharana Gayaki comes from of the most ancient school of music, the Gwalior gharana. It is also known as the Imdadkhani gharana after Ustad Imdad Khan, the son of Ustad Sahebdad Khan. Ustad Sahebdad Khan was trained and influenced by Ustad Haddu and Ustad Hassu Khan of the Gwalior gharana, and thus dhrupad and khayal vocal genres can be glimpsed in the playing style and in the choice of ragas. Based on the classical structure of the raga, Itawah Gharana includes alap, jor and jhala (slow then accelerating improvisation) without percussion as it is played in dhrupad, followed by the khayal composition called Gat, with the tabla, developed in numerous improvisations on rhythm and note like tans and layakaris.

Whatever the reason or occasion, there’s no doubt that Hindustani Classical Music makes us feel good, and it can definitely help improve our mood. And it’s no different when you’re in labour: research has shown that listening to Hindustani Classical Music during birth can actually help reduce the perception of pain and decrease anxiety. Studies have revealed that Hindustani Classical Music has a calming effect on both blood pressure and breathing in labour, and is linked to the fact that Hindustani Classical Music triggers the brain to release increased levels of the ‘happy hormones’ endorphins and dopamine.

“According to me, Hindustani Classical Music is not only for Entertainment, it is much beyond that. Spirituality and Hindustani Classical Music are two sides of the same coin. In India, the origin of Hindustani Classical Music was in the spiritual traditions of the country. Music that creates Spiritual Bliss, for the performer and is shared by the listeners is the essence of this art form even today.”
