Holy Week and Easter, 2012 - 38 photos - http://theatln.tc/HuCUeM - Last week, Christians around the world celebrated Holy Week and Easter, commemorating the final days of Jesus Christ -- his return to Jerusalem, his crucifixion, and his resurrection. Families attended church services, hooded penitents took part in processions, and children hunted for Easter eggs. In Catholic passion plays, participants depicted Jesus' trial and death. Other local rituals drew heavily on earlier pre-Christian traditions. Collected here are images from several Holy Week and Easter activities this year.

Afghanistan: March 2012 - 41 photos - http://theatln.tc/HarblN - After a tough February, the NATO presence in Afghanistan proved even more difficult in this past month. On March 11, United States Army Sergeant Robert Bales went on a violent house-to-house rampage in a village near his base, killing 17 civilians, including 9 children. According to recent polls, domestic support for the war has been sharply dropping, but the Obama administration appears to be sticking to its timetable, aiming for a complete troop withdrawal in 2014.

On April 17, the shuttle Discovery will be attached to a modified 747 Jumbo Jet for transport to the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Virginia. Endeavour will go to Los Angeles in mid-September, and in early 2013, Atlantis will take its place on permanent display at Florida's Kennedy Space Center.

A Look Inside China - 41 photos - http://theatln.tc/GUVcTi - As China's population and economy continue to grow, the country is scrambling to solve challenges in housing, elder care, cultural and political institutions, the environment, and other areas of everyday life. Today's collection, a recent gathering of images from across the nation, covers a range of subjects from wheelchair dancers to bear bile farms, a monkey-controlled robot arm to a Tibetan exile protester who set himself on fire earlier today, and much more.

North Korea Prepares for a Milestone Year - 37 photos - http://theatln.tc/HZhTSO - North Korea recently invited dozens of foreign journalists into its secretive country to cover the 100th birthday celebration for founder Kim Il Sung. Among pageants and openings, the event drawing the most attention is the scheduled launch of a rocket carrying a weather satellite. The launch is already drawing criticism from Western governments: If successful, it could demonstrate North Korea's capacity to produce a long-range missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead. Despite their official invitation, foreign photographers are still restricted -- escorted wherever they go and unable to photograph more than they can see within selected facilities or from the windows of buses and trains.

Remembering Project Gemini - 41 photos - http://theatln.tc/HOP8tT - Fifty years ago, NASA began a program called Project Gemini, developing deep space travel techniques and equipment to prepare for the upcoming Apollo program. Two unmanned and ten manned missions were flown, and astronauts and engineers accomplished hundreds of goals, including the first American spacewalk, a 14-day endurance test in orbit, space docking, and the highest-ever manned orbit at 1,369 km (850 mi). After the project ended in 1966, many Gemini astronauts brought their experiences with them as they went on to fly Apollo missions to the Moon.

30 Years Since the Falklands War - 41 photos - http://theatln.tc/H1QQHj - Next Monday, April 2, will mark the 30th anniversary of the start of the Falklands War. The Falkland Islands, are the subject of a long-standing dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom. In 1982, Argentina sent 600 troops to take the islands. The British government was surprised by the attack, but quickly organized a task force to retake the territory. A brief but bloody series of battles took place at sea, in the air, and on the ground, ending with a British victory 74 days after the initial invasion. In all, more than 900 people were killed and more than 2,000 injured.
