I won't be posting any more news photos here, on my personal G+ page. Many thanks to those who have followed me here, come join me on the official page, and I'll continue with more and better to come!

Last year marked the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, commemorated by the Atlantic in a special issue. Although photography was still in its infancy, Civil War photographers produced thousands of images, bringing the harsh realities of war to those on the home front in a new and visceral way. As brother fought brother and the future of the United States was uncertain, the public appetite for information was fed by these images. Today's collection is part 1 of 3, covering the places of the Civil War: the battleships, prisons, cities and farms where history was made. Keep in mind, as you view these photographs, that they were taken 150 years ago -- a glimpse of the United States, which was only 85 years old at the time.

The Moscow-Protest Photo That Wasn't What It Seemed - http://theatln.tc/xKvdzE - How a case of mistaken identity led to the discovery of manipulation in an image from the end of the Soviet era. That Moscow protest news photo being passed around last week? It was really from 1991 -- and it turns out it had been altered.

I'm trying a new experiment, taking requests - Is there a subject you'd like to see a good photo from? A photo you've already seen somewhere else, but would like to see a higher-res version? A particular photographer, event, or theme? If I have access and can find it, I'll try to post it. First 40 requests I'll find & post. Full details here: http://theatln.tc/zG6Vnv The requests for this experiment will be posted in an entry tomorrow morning.

Got a request? Post it in the comments below and I'll see what I can do!

A couple of In Focus Announcements: 1) A call for submissions: We invite you to share your photos of "America at Work" http://theatln.tc/xnhDHM , and 2) I will be online for a Live Chat on Monday, Jan. 23 @ 4 pm Drop by, ask anything http://theatln.tc/ybgkG2 Many thanks, -Alan
