I'm new here so I don't know if many members are into small sailboats. As a relative newcomer to sailing (and retirement!), I am always looking for inspiration. I have found it often on YouTube and with many of the sailors who post videos.

One sailor that I have come to regard as something of a hero, is an Australian named Simon Carter. I relate to him in part because we are about the same age, he keeps it simple and affordable, and doesn't sit at a dock drinking martinis -- he's out there for weeks at a time enjoying sailing at its most basic.

As Simon puts it in his Australian accent, "I'm living me dream!"

I want to introduce more people to Simon and sailing, so I posted one of his videos on my blog -- "Driveasailboat." As I said, it's pretty basic but for those just getting into sailing as I am, his videos are fun -- and inspiring -- to watch.

Feel free to read my blog post about Simon, or look up Simon Carter on YouTube to find his channel.

Back to Sailing Basics with Simon Carter
"I'm living me dream!" -- Simon Carter Over the past two years I've watched hundreds of YouTube videos about sailing. Some were published by couples traveling afar on expensive floating homes, others were truly engaging and I couldn't wait to see the next i...

The Real Wayne's World - A Totally Different Approach to Making Sailing Affordable
Many would-be sailboat owners spend hours watching YouTube videos about sailing. It's a relaxing way to check out different kinds of boats, different approaches to ownership, learn about boat maintenance, and decide if the other sailors out there are people...

My Garden Zombie Assistant

Every Garden Zombie needs a helper. This was mine.

Chance turned 16 years old in November, 2015. When he was much younger he liked to chase turkeys down a hill in Warner. There were six of them and they all flew off like huge, impossible winged creatures. I’m pretty sure Chance had no intention of catching one. He just liked the excitement of seeing them trying to fly away.

He liked it when I was gardening. He was content watching me trying to grow stuff and swearing at the all the stones we have in our soil up here.

Chance was always by my side from the time he was three months old until he passed away next to me on our living room floor the night of December 1.

In all candor, I did not handle those last few hours particularly well. Chance was the brave one. Me, I could not — I did not want to say goodbye. It’s hard for me to accept that this gentle, funny, energetic being is no longer here. But I do still talk to him when I'm cooking or cleaning house and photos like the one below are on my computer screens and in picture frames. He also has his own Facebook page (facebook.com/frankmarafiote).

When this cold New England earth thaws out, I will plant some flowers for Chance. I don’t know what kind yet and am open to suggestions. But they must be like him: hardy, handsome, easy to care for, a joy to behold.

RIP, my friend!
