Units from Montgomery County Iowa - Company F
and Company M, 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th
Infantry Division, served in the WWII North Africa
and Italian Campaigns.   The 34th Infantry Division
was comprised of troops from North and South
Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa.  Minnesota I-35
in its entirety is designated the Red Bull Highway.

The photo "Homecoming" was the 1944 Pulitzer Prize co-winner for photography, taken by Earle L Bunker of the Omaha World Herald.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert L. Moore (Brigadier General, National Guard, retired), returning to Villisca Iowa in July 1943.   Injured in Tunisia, North Africa, while commanding the 2nd Battalion, 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th "Red Bull" Infantry Division,
II Corps, U. S. Army.

Citizen Soldiers of Red Oak and Montgomery County Iowa continue to serve in harm's way - seven significant deployments since the U.S. Civil War.  Read about Specialist Christine Morrison of the Iowa National Guard, stationed in Afghanistan, and Elwin Diehls who fought in Tunisia, and was a POW in Nazi Germany.

The SS Red Oak Victory supported the troops during WWII, Korea, & Vietnam.  Now restored and open to the public by the Richmond (CA) Museum of History.

The Restored Burlington Northern Depot & World War II
Memorial Museum, Red Oak Iowa. The community was
officially founded (as Red Oak Junction) in 1869 when
the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad (now BNSF)
trackage was laid.
