Great news!

(Scientific publication is open access)
Hot vents on the seabed could have spontaneously produced the organic molecules necessary for life, according to new research. The study shows how the surfaces of mineral particles inside hydrothermal vents have similar chemical properties to enzymes, the biological molecules that govern chemical reactions in living organisms. This means that vents are able to create simple carbon-based molecules, such as methanol and formic acid, out of the diss...

SEATS AVAILABLE @ RELEASE EVENT

After one year of research, Boyan Slat will finally announce the results of The Ocean Cleanup's feasibility study.

Follow the live event teh 3rd of June (tomorrow) at 4 pm CET; 10 AM EDT
http://www.theoceancleanup.com/live/

Besides the incredible support of volunteers, sponsors and funders, we also wouldn't have been able to complete this essential first step without you - our supporters. Hence, we now enable you to be present at the release events in New York and Delft (NL).

Note: Be quick - both events have only limited capacity.

New Cave-Dwelling ‘Shrimp’ Discovered in California

"A translucent underwater cave dweller that looks like a skeleton and travels like an inchworm is the newest member of California’s array of marine life.

Scientists found a new species of skeleton shrimp — a group of tiny crustaceans that are actually caprellid amphipods, not shrimp — in vials collected from a small cave offshore of Southern California’s Catalina Island. The two vials, one containing a male and one containing a female, were housed in the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa.”

One of the most mysterious forms of life may turn out to be a rich and untapped source of antibacterial drugs. The mysterious life form is Archaea, a family of single-celled organisms that thrive in environments like boiling hydrothermal pools…

Good news for our #oceans

Enthousiasm about +The Ocean Cleanup #TheOceanCleanup
Eighteen months ago, I learned about a young man named Boyan Slat. An avid diver, Boyan was swimming in Greece several years ago, and was surprised to see how much trash was floating around in the Aegean Sea. He did some research and discovered that the problem was a global one.

The chemical reactions behind the formation of common metabolites in modern organisms could have formed spontaneously in the earth's early oceans, questioning the events thought to have led to the origin of life.

News on all life sciences
Introduction
This page is curated by +Marleen Roelofs. It is dedicated to all life sciences.
I am a biologist and particularly interested in the origins of life and therefore follow all the news on hydrothermal vents and black smokers. These are places on the oceanfloor close to vulcanic regions where tectonic plates are moving apart and where super-heated water comes trough the oceanfloor. The minerals precipitate and form a black chimney. Around this chimney exist large communities of animals that survive trough symbiosis with chemosynthetic bacteria.
I hope that it will be possible to start interesting discussions between members of this page. Probably it will soon be possible for followers to post news and articles. The subject is not limited to black smokers and posts may cover all life sciences.
