But when people ask why I don’t visit a certain city, it’s because I can’t be doing 150 gigs a year any more.

I turn down far more shows than I take - which buys me back precious time with friends and family, and 8 hours sleep a night. Because I want to do this my whole life, so sustainability is more important than anything.

Concrete Angel nearly never happened and this is that story.

I heard Christina’s original vocal demo at an afterparty following Creamfields UK in 2011 and despite the fact I was proper fucked, I could tell it could be a massive vocal track.

Christina was a rock / acoustic artist at that point and knew little about dance music at that stage (hope she doesn’t mind me saying that) but her and her manager knew I was some sort of established DJ and agreed to give me a shot.

We agreed how a deal would look and I was sent the parts. Time to get to work.

Months went by.

Again and again I tried to write the music to it and just kept choking. I COULDN’T GET IT RIGHT. No matter what I did, nothing was working.

Every week, Christina’s manager would bug me for a demo, and every week I’d swerve him, and they were getting seriously pissed off at my lack of progress.

Eventually, he told me they’d had enough of waiting. They’d written this killer track, and they wanted it out there.

He told me if I couldn’t get my shit together, they were cancelling the collab, and releasing Concrete Angel as a solo acoustic song.

Sat about to board a flight, I wrote an email to him: “Sorry mate, tried everything on this and it just isn’t working. I know you’re in a rush, so reluctantly, I’m going to have to hand it back”.

My hovered over the ‘send’ button.

Then I stopped.

Something told me to have one last go.

I decided to try once more on the 2 hour flight. If I couldn’t come up with something, I’d just send the email walking away when I landed.

Somehow, on that flight it all clicked.

I suddenly had the main melody. The breakdown chords. I was literally bouncing out of my seat. All of a sudden I could see how the finished thing might look and the rest, as they say, is history.

The point is this

The biggest record of my life was within one finger-click of not happening.

Often, your biggest accomplishments will be proceeded by the biggest hurdles.

PUSH THE FUCK THROUGH THEM.

I often get asked what the secret is to nailing a good vocal trance track.

Obsession.

Right now I’m on my 20th attempt to write the beats for the verse of this song I am working on.

20 f*cking attempts.

Each one basically a tune in itself that I’ve thrown away. Each one totally passable, good, fine, solid. I could release any of them tomorrow and they’d work.

But I don’t want fine. I want spine-tingling, goosebump-inducing perfection.

So I’ve thrown away 19 good ideas in search of that one perfect one. Of course ‘perfect’ is a mirage that doesn’t exist but obsessively searching for it can take you a little closer.

Why I am so crazy about this shit? Well, this particular song is one of the best vocals I’ve ever been lucky enough to work with, and I’ll only get to initially release it once. So it has to be as good as I can humanely make it.

In short, you want to excel at anything, be more obsessed than everyone else.

I can’t wait for you all to hear this one. When it’s right.

And... that might be a while.

It’s been an amazing summer of gigs, partying, travel, family and friends, and much more but tonight I’m going to sleep in my own bed for the first time in six weeks and I can’t express how excited I am about that 🙏 .

Gonna detox from my cell phone for a bit and schedule some long, uninterrupted periods of creative free time in the studio...

Which is always where my best work comes.

We randomly spotted the place where I did my first ever photo shoot for a Mixmag article in 2002.

It’s been nearly ten years since Emma Hewitt and I did a track together. Might have to fix that soon 😉
