Sophisticated farm-to-table American fare in a refreshed 1833 house with many stylish seating areas.- Google
"The cheddar bacon biscuits with chili butter was amazing."

Overpriced, mediocre food; quality cocktails and atmosphere. The good cocktails (three will run you about $40) and fire pits outside seemed to be an indicator of good things to come, but unfortunately there was nothing special (or even good) about the six dishes we ordered. Our waiter was attentive and pleasant but unfortunately didn't make up for the underwhelming food. I would not go back.

While the others go on about the desirable and reasonably priced cuisine, I found both the warm sincere service and the delightfully romantic atmosphere to superbly complement the inspired menu.

The historic Stokes adobe has been lovingly restored to period decor and is home to the single best place to get a cocktail on the Monterey peninsula. Sure it's a little pricey but you get what you pay for in a big way. The elegance and craft in the cocktails are something special. I would rate this place 5 stars just for the drinks alone but what they do with the food is equally impressive. The cheddar bacon biscuits with maple chili butter manage to showcase each of those tasty ingredients without any of them running away with the show and are the bar apps you didn't know you desperately need. It's been a while since I've had dinner here but I plan to soon and when i do I will be updating this review. Stay tuned for more deliciousness!

Our experience was brief but we were impressed. We were looking for somewhere to grab dessert at 9:30 PM on a Sunday and most places around town were closed. We called 1833 and they were more than happy to accommodate us even though they were only open for about 20 more minutes by the time we got there. We ordered as takeout so we wouldn't have to keep them there late and they packed it very thoughtfully (kept the ice cream separated from the hot stuff). They were very friendly and never rushed us. In fact while we waited we were allowed to roam the mostly empty restaurant and check out the very well decorated rooms throughout the house. It has a very unique, eerie, romantic atmosphere and a great patio with fire pits outside. I had the Cheddar Apple Pie and it was to die for- the cheddar was not noticeable but it made the taste more savory:) My husband had the Bourbon Pudding (I think) with sugar cookies and it was also fantastic.

Creative and delicious food in a beautiful, hip (but not too hip), and romantic setting. There aren't any other restaurants in the Monterey / Carmel area that have this combination of service, atmosphere, creativity, and deliciousness. Cocktails are expertly constructed, and all the food we've had -- but especially the Hawaiian sweet bread, short ribs wrapped in pastry with Vietnamese style sauce, halibut, and maple pot de creme -- are beautiful and inventive with complex flavor combinations that amaze. If you're looking for a "safe" place to take a non-adventurous diner, this might not be the best choice. But for someone who appreciates great food, you can't find a better place on the central coast.

Fun unusual foods. Chicken is the safety meal don't recommend it as the other items are fabulous. Oysters worth the experience. Avoid the desserts. Have 1 tables idea absenthe if a table near you doesnt.

The entire menu has changed and nothing on the new menu looked good so we walked out and went someplace else. All our favorite items are gone. If you have been before and liked the old menu dont go, its all gone.
