Don’t sell the eagle short. June 3, 2014

Three days on the road from Florida to Canada with lots of time to think.
First I want to say what a privilege it is to live in the United States where one can drive 1500 miles north from Florida on good roads and for the most part feel that you are in a safe environment. I don’t think you can say that about any other continent these days. Certainly some countries in Western Europe are safe but Eastern Europe presents its challenges in terms of personal safety. Nowhere can you travel in such freedom without checkpoints; fear of bandits stopping you; lots of gas stations; stay along the way in decent accommodation and eat any food you want without the expectation of getting ill.
That says a lot about how good things are. Yes there are things that are wrong in the U.S. but for the most part we have it right in terms of a balance of extraordinary personal freedom to travel and to say and do what you want without undue interference. The fact that we now have more  tracking of our personal lives, that none of us likes,  is perhaps a small price to pay to have the freedom to get up and move around vast distances in this country without anyone questioning you or asking what you are doing.
One has to understand that the workings of any modern industrial state are a finely tuned machine to first deliver food, housing and personal security (Maslow’s hierarchy of needs) to millions and then to provide an environment that can afford each of  us the opportunity to satisfy our higher needs of self-actualization in our own chosen ways. America's amazing distribution system accomplishes miracles every day across an enormous geography that no other country can yet emulate.  Yes, there is tremendous income inequality in the U.S. that should be rectified (Thanks Seattle for setting an example) and egregious greed that should be tempered but nowhere else can one feel free as one does in the U.S. You can still find your very own niche in a very diverse society whether it is religious, political or even sexual. You can express yourself to your hearts content on the internet. You can be as outrageous as you want on social media without the fear of retribution. Yes, I hate the idea and I find it distasteful the NSA is recording my calls and keystrokes but no one’s life can be a completely closed book today and as long as these security agencies don’t start using what is in those calls and keystrokes to harass and/or intimidate me from engaging in lawful activity, I think it is a price we have to pay to live in an organized society that allows us these extraordinary freedoms. The alternative is anarchy or dictatorship. Churchill got it right when he said democracy was the worst system except when you considered the alternative.

For a minute consider the alternatives that exist in most countries today. Let’s talk about the Ukraine, Nigeria and Syria for starters. Daily fear and for the most part the basic need of security is not met nor expected. Unless you can feel safe in your person, you find it hard to get on with your life and be creative and entrepreneurial. Likewise personal security is non-existent in Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan. Simply put most of the world is not a friendly place. There are a few countries besides western Europe like Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Canada where one can go out in the morning without the expectation of encountering soldiers or anarchists with guns on the street. Yes there are a lot of guns in the U.S. but one still does not have the daily expectation of being involved in a shootout.

Yes so I am going to say it – don’t sell the eagle short. It is still the shining light.

So where does this fit in with a discussion on MH370?

Well it seems the discussion has moved in the direction of cover-up/conspiracy involving the U.S. and others. Neither the plane nor any confirmed identifiable part has turned up going into four months. It has simply disappeared and many would assert that the story is beginning to disappear as well from headline media and that suits a lot of people just fine. +Christophe Pompeani  has penned a good piece on this today.

However, before we assume a broad international conspiracy or a multi-national organized mis-information campaign and silence, I think we ought to stop and consider a few things.
The scenario involving a hi-jacking with intent to use the aircraft as a weapon against Diego Garcia or any other target just does not fit the bill unless one or both the pilots were intent on this. The authorities just cannot come up with anything on the pilots. The Captain had political differences with the government. If he was to use the aircraft as a weapon, he would surely direct it against the regime and the Petronas Towers. He had no bone to pick with the United States. If it was a hijacking involving others in the cabin, they would not have gained access to the cockpit that easily and I am pretty sure there would have been ample time to get 7600 into the transponder or get off a call.
Consequently, I continue to discount hijacking. More importantly though is that the conspiracy theorists have extrapolated this idea of hijacking to involve an intentional shooting down of the craft by America and a complete clean up and cover up by authorities including the United States and Australia. I find this preposterous. Yes, the plane could have been shot down by the Malaysian or Indonesian air force but if that were the case, I believe the U.S. would have that intelligence and would never accept a cover-up by Malaysia or Indonesia of a shoot down. Australia would never have expended the resources they have in a fruitless search. The intentional shooting down of a civilian passenger plane would kill aviation travel word-wide and have enormous financial repercussions. When the Russians shot down KAL in the early 1980’s  it chilled air travel for a long time.

There is only one country and perhaps several commercial interests that have an interest in a cover up in this situation if the issue was neglected maintenance, SB's or AD's not done, or illegal cargo. Malaysia as beneficial owner of MAS has an obvious conflict of interest if the aircraft were not maintained to regulations and all AD’s done there is possible criminal responsibility. Likewise if they allowed illegal cargo and it brought down the craft, there is criminal liability. The full cargo seems to leave a lot of questions. The original shippers of the batteries and the true consignees are yet to be named. Perhaps both criminal and civil liability there for those commercial businesses.

If the accident was an oxygen hose fire and decompression similar to the Egyptair incident, Boeing could be held responsible but not for a minute do I believe Boeing does not want this aircraft found or the causes covered-up if they related to the airframe or systems. It is flatly not in their commercial interest in the long run not to determine the exact cause(s) of any accidents with Boeing aircraft even if it is their own design flaws. They have liability insurance to cover that. If you have a problem with a design you absolutely want to know about it and not have speculation floating around to benefit your competitors.

However, why Boeing won’t comment, confirm or deny on the “fire bottle” found in the Maldives is beyond me. But they may have other information and expressly know that the Malaysians are covering something up and want to keep the heat on them. After all we have yet to see any maintenance logs and the status of SB’s and AD’s.

My sights remained fixed on Malaysia and MAS both of whom have never been straight from day 1 and we all know it. Stories were concocted. Information manipulated and omitted. And I will say it again I think the Royal Malaysian Air Force was asleep. There is no other explanation.  

This new interesting personal observation by a woman on a sailboat transitting through the area also confirms a fire theory in that she claims to have seen a burning plane trailing smoke. The time of the observation was not posted. Could she have seen black smoke at night or very early morning?
I was aware of the low frequency sounds picked up about ten days ago when I read the first report. I have been trying to see if anyone else can corroborate these and maybe triangulate. A lot of acoustic researchers maybe should go back and listen to their recordings on the morning of March 8 about half an hour before the last Inmarsat ping to about an hour after. There is always the possibility a sound went unnoticed because it didn’t correspond to other known sounds they were looking for.  From my rudimentary knowledge of Autec in the Bahamas and low frequency hydrophones for tracking subs and shipping, perhaps there are other assets off India or even Diego Garcia that could provide a clue. Triangulate those sounds and you have a location.

It is time to find this plane. It is out there somewhere. You can be sure of one thing though the story will not go away quietly into the night. There is nothing like a mystery to drive human curiosity to its limits.
