David,
I've always respected your views - and your input into Musical Futures development - but, as Anna and John, have pointed out, you're just flat wrong on this one.
If there's any polarisation going on, it's by those who insist that kids can't have a valid musical experience without learning notation. The founder of Shakespeare Behind Bars tells a powerfully moving story about how an illiterate prisoner bluffed  his peers into thinking he was 'reading' a script, when he'd stayed up the previous night getting a colleague to read him it, so he could  memorise it. When his ploy became transparent, he said that  he felt 'ashamed'. Paul McCartney has said that he often feels like an impostor because he can't read music. This is the damage caused by such polarisation - which, to some extent, MF is trying to ameliorate, not perpetrate.
