I find Google Plus better for communicating with people than other sites. Flickr is an image dump, it's groups forgotten and bloated with tens of thousands of images. 500px is slicker but doesn't offer a meaningful way to communicate with people, and traffic is low unless you've built a lot of momentum. SmugMug is only for portfolio. There isn't the interest on Facebook.

Main thing Google Plus is missing is critique groups.

Some good street critique groups on Flickr for the truly masochistic:

Street portrait, Essouira

This chap's shop had been closed for two months because the town was doing such a bad job of upgrading the drains. He wanted me to take a photo of him with the open sewer by his shop so the world would see this, and hopefully get the authorities to get a move on.

Unfortunately that shot was not as interesting as the portrait, but the message remains!

Street kid, Meknes

Just returned from a two week holiday in Morocco. Full of frustrations, not least that people are really not up for being photographed, and don't even like it if you ask

This young boy however demanded that I take his photograph, but only after covering his face

Seeing the world (through a minicam)

Quite pleased with the matching outfits here, but wish I'd opened the aperture to isolate the girls from the background, which I find a little distracting. What do you think?

Good News, Oxford Street

Been working with the Olympus 45mm today. It's a lot of fun. After work I walk up from Leicester Square to Oxford Street, there are tons of tourists and office workers out and the light is good now the clocks have changed

Looking back

I love this guys retro look. Wasn't sure whether to convert to black and white, but in the end decided on a high contrast look with a bit of colour as I felt it went well with his beige suit, whilst reducing the distraction from the womans red hair to the left

"The problem with most photographers nowadays is that they upload far too much work"
Great and timely article. I just dropped a photo I posted which I realised straight away had nothing going for it. I like the idea of waiting at least a week before posting, I know that I often post photos then a few days later think, "what exactly did I see in that?" and then "how do I stop myself doing this next time"

The trouble is that if I only posted good shots I would post almost never, and then how would you get the feedback you need to improve? It's not all about portfolio

Just finished a blog post on the importance of editing your best work in street photography. Check it out and remember, "less is more!"

Juice stand, deep in the Fes souk

Once you get a mile or so into the Old Medina of Fes, it's possible to get out your camera and pause without being surrounded by hawkers, trinklet sellers and would be guides. I stood here for about five minutes to give these guys time to forget about me before crouching and taking this shot

It's all about getting close. Shooting with the 20mm means you have to engage, you can't snipe like you can with a zoom, but you can't shoot from the hip like you can with a wide

London based photographer
Introduction
I've been interested in photography since my travels in Asia in 2003, but I became more serious in 2006 when I travelled overland from London to Toyko along the old silk route.

Now living in London and my current focus is on street and urban photography, and generally trying to photograph people which I have spent so long trying to avoid.

My other main interest is martial arts (hsing i chuan)

Appreciate any and all critical feedback!
