if r > d where r is the rate of return on capital and d is the growth rate of the economy, the country will be dominated by a wealthy oligarchy.  According to this story, r = 4% and d = 2%.  Interesting.

Here is a link to the book.

I think the word "Oligarchy" needs to become a commonly used word in today's society in order to bring light to the issue. If the people do not act to stop the 1%, we as a society will regress to medieval like days when we were ruled by Kings and Queens. These one percenters are hiding behind the green curtain. This allows them to follow their own interest leaving us with the final bill.

+Steve Johnson I have a one hour window where the feeder is lit but the building is not.  By 8AM the sun his high enough that it is above the trees and the roof shades the building.  By 9AM, the roof is shading the feeder and the birds are in shadow.  This is natural light.  The feeder is on the edge of the porch.  I stand so that the background is the siding between the two windows.  This year I took the rim off the feeder so the birds couldn't just sit there.  They back away between sips and pose for pictures.

One last thing, in Photoshop, I bring  up the black level so what detail there was of the building is gone.  That does not hit any of the bird as it is much brighter so it is really an adjustment I would make unless I wanted detail in the building.  I bring it up so that there is maximum contrast right on the beak.

I took this so long ago (slide film) that I can't remember where I was at the time.  Anyone know where this is?

A very, very good day for the Affordable Care Act, the officials who fought for it, and the people benefiting from it.

Password security.

There is a lot of news about password security today.  But did you know that there is a reverse password dictionary?  Enter an encrypted password into this dictionary and it will tell you what the password was.  You can check your password to see if it is in the dictionary but the act of looking it up seems to put it in the dictionary!   I created a safe way to test your passwords.  Check it out.  Enter "password" in my site and my page will encrypt it.  Then look up that encrypted word in the dictionary (follow the link).  That page (not mine) will tell you that the encrypted code you entered was generated from the password "password".  Since that page doesn't know you entered "password" on my site, it can't enter it into the dictionary.

I created a front end to the dictionary where I will encrypt your password and link to the dictionary so you can see if your encrypted password is in the dictionary without entering it in the process.  I just double checked and my page doesn't even do the normal page log so there is no chance that I have saved your password even accidently.

Below is a link to the site.

PS.  How do you know I am not a scam?  My site, L-36.com is a worderful sailing oriented site and I value its reputation.  I would not screw it up for this.

Two-Factor Authentication resolves most of these concerns. Insist on it.

+Harald Mitterhofer  It used to be in California that the highest paid official was the UCB football coach.  I see now they list a basketball coach.  Times change :-)

Introduction
I am a retired engineer and manager, a photographer, a sailor, the father of two wonderful kids, and husband of Gayle.  I attended Westwood (K-5),  Westland (5-6), Emerson JHS, University High, Santa Monica City Collage, and Stanford University (BS-EE and MS-EE).  I worked at Hewlett Packard (Engineering Manager) before Carlie ruined it, then Stanford Telecom (VP and GM)  before Val sold it, and Intel (Business Unit GM) , before I came to my senses and quit.

My dual interests are photography and sailing.  Most of my public posts are photography so if you want to see my sailing posts, send me an email and I will put you in my sailing circle.  I maintain a sailing web site at http://L-36.com.
