Symphony of Colors, Snowmass Wilderness, CO

Autumn is responsible for providing Symphony of Colors you see in this image. Warm light from the clouds accentuates the fall colors and the reflections make this shot complete. Here is an article that gives you tips about photographing fall colors: http://www.photographybyvarina.com/photography/tutorials/photographing-fall-colors

About this Photograph
This is an example of forced composition. See those logs in the foreground? I knew that a vertical composition would have far stronger impact if I could find some logs to get close to the shore...I did and here is a much stronger composition: https://plus.google.com/photos/101145980349117737014/albums/5628088772562509057/5641068818799450098

So, why did I decide to take a horizontal shot? Because a vertical shot cannot always be used in certain media types (such as a large format Wall calendar or as a Desktop background). I wanted to have shots in both format so that I had an opportunity to supply my images to different markets. Whenever possible (even if it is not perfect) I will always try to take shots in both vertical and horizontal compositions to maximize my opportunity of usage.

Silver Streak, Grand Tetons National Park, WY

There must have been about a dozen photographer behind me shooting the reflections of the Grand Tetons behind me that morning, but I was drawn to the backlit mist just as the sun was coming up. The cloudless sky over the Tetons was rather uninteresting.

How was this photograph created?
As my skills were rather limited at the time, I went to great lengths to avoid the bright sky on my right. The photos is intentionally left dark to make the mist stand out. This was also one of my first attempt at manual blending...I spend hours trying to figure out how bring out the details in different parts of the image (back in 2005 HDR was not quite as popular).

At the time I was not convinced going through blending multiple images was was worth the effort. :-)))

"The first thing that happened is I uploaded it and looked at it and called my girlfriend in. I think at that point we knew it was a really cool photo. It was something I had wanted to photograph the two years I had been here, but I didn't really think anybody else would look at it."

Jura-Burgundy District, France

We photographer love to photograph either late in the day or early in the morning when light is optimal...but recent post from +Tamara Pruessner had me questioning if we miss out on the beauty this planet has to offer during other times.

So today's image is an attempt to capture that beauty at midday in harsh light when we cringe try to avoid photography all to frequently. As you can see even harsh light can create some wonderful images. This photograph was taken on my one and only trip to France on side of the road at between 3-4 PM in the afternoon. I used side lighting to bring out the textures in the trees and placed them using the rule of the thirds.

Do you have example of good photos in bad light? Want to see what others have accomplished? Feel free to contribute ideas and check out this thread:

Serenity, Banff National Park, Canada
#PhotographyWorkflow , #howtophotograph

I noticed that I did not have many images of lakes on my G+ portfolio...so here is a lake that is very recognizable one in North America. Moraine Lake with its brilliant colors and deep blue waters is a popular place to photograph. I am more likely to photograph dynamic weather with brilliant colored skies...but I love this shot for the sense of serenity that it conveys.

How was this image created?
I used a soft GND filter to balance the light and capture the soft morning glow on the mountain. On this particular morning everything was very very still...and I used an extra long shutter speed to make sure that the water of the lake reflected not only the mountains but conveyed a sense of the morning calm.

Enjoy and Share.
