Sad to say, this place does not live up to the hype. To begin with, I don't really know how to place the weird vibe. It's not hipster, not casual, not divey, certainly not fancy- it's too dirty and rundown for that. From the strange taste in art on the walls, to the mismatched tables and chairs in the dining area, to the paper-mache-like animal heads on a section of the wall, to the endless number of mirrors, and the very dim-lighting during the nighttime hours, I just don't know where this falls on my weirdo-radar. As for the food, that was the biggest letdown of all. I tried the famed Bacon-Wrapped Matzoh Balls served on a dill-horseradish aioli. I'm not sure what all the noise was about, but it was basically a steamed ball of corn flour wrapped in bacon. The sauce was mostly tasteless, and the food was so hot I have a blister on the roof of my mouth the size of a dime. That last part was my fault, of course. Don't eat like I do, kids. It's dangerous. What made it ever MORE of a letdown was the fact that I had to wait more than 15 minutes for my 4 little balls, (don't laugh), of Matzoh. And at $9 a plate, that just doesn't sit well with me. I will say that the rest of their menu is really out there, and a few of the items sound pretty darn good. I'm talking about the Duck confit latke with duck-seared applesauce & sour cream. Or the grilled cheese sandwich with pistachio butter, fig jam, and red frill mustard salad. That one sounds pretty bomb. The Seared pig's head and pig's ears are really a bit of a turn-off, though. If you love your drinks, though, they have 3 or so bars scattered throughout this restaurant, so take your pick. However, there are nicer places to have a drink in this vicinity, if you ask me.

4 of us ordered few dishes and ate it tappas style. I guess my expectations were a lil too high for Gorbals. It's been building up since I heard about it more than half a year ago. I've been in the restaurant once for a pop up brunch that rented the kitchen...that I loved. - The popular dish within our group was the bacon brussel sprouts. - Banh Min Poutine was yummy but it wasn't anything special. - Dry-aged burger was good. The description, 7 ways onions, sounded better than it looked/tasted. - Bone Marrow was very disappointing. The bread had a stronger flavor than the marrow. - Ox Tail was pretty good but not memorable. The cocktail drinks had unique names which made me smile.

Two of us went here for DineLA last night, so we got to try 2/3s of the DineLA menu. I had somewhat mixed feelings about it: on one hand, most of the food was indeed quite exceptionally tasty. On the other hand, I felt like it suffered from a problem a lot of fancy restaurants suffer from: for the amount we paid (way more than I usually spend on dining out, but I'd always wanted to try restaurant week), the food was amazing, but I felt like I didn't get very *much* of it, certainly not for the price. Still, the food certainly was amazing. The drinks were also expensive, but probably worth it if you like fancy drinks. I could definitely tell they were made with pretty top-shelf ingredients, and some crazy combinations. I also felt like it suffered from another problem, though, that is certainly not very common among fancy restaurants: they really needed way more ventilation than they had, or some proper air conditioning. It was super stuffy in there.

The gorbals is an amazing addition to downtown. So glad chef Ilan of top chef fame brought this spainish/yiddish/small plates restaurant to downtown. We got the bacon wrapped matzoh balls, squash blossoms, cucumber salad, latkes (fried to a crisp. Sad), ink batter fish and chips and the Bahn mi pouting. All amazing minus the over done latkes. We finished with the sticky toffee pudding which was the real reason we came to the gorbals. It did not disappoint.

Like expensive food? Great! This place is for you! Yeah, it's totally expensive, and that's the big downside of this place. however, the food is excellent! Even though the price is really high, this is a great place to take someone out on a date, or if you're trying to impress someone by throwing down big bucks for small plates. The food is excellent, but it tends to be on the rich/creamy side. Otherwise, I really like this place. I'm not super sure about the price point, but for me, a guy with simple tastes, I like it.

What a disappointment! To begin, the glassware and silverware were dirty (not to mention the bathrooms). The bass sound gave all three of us headaches. We shared several dishes, recommended by our waitress, and all agreed that the food was lackluster, and the presentation sloppy. The funniest item was the duck latkes with apple sauce—the applesauce being 1/4 inch dots decorating the plate. What is all the hype about, we wondered? Cross that one off my Bucket List.

The decor is ultra modern hipster style. Personally i like it, but other people might not. The food is the best part, they have a changing menu based on what is available in the market, or rather what is in season. The bacon warped matzo balls are item to eat there. The sticky toffee pudding was amazing, it was sweet but not overly sweet. But i am a huge fan of sweets, and what is perfectly sweet for me, might not be perfectly sweet for others. This is a place to get standard food, this place is food for the adventurer. This is the place where you have to try something new.

Been here twice. The chef was on Top Chef, I think. Creative dishes, a nice mix of Irish and classic American gastropub fare, upscale dining, and fusion. My favorite dish was the Bahn Mi--out of this world tasty. They had a special the last time I was there with lamb neck which was pretty horrid (it really tasted like lamb in a bad way), but otherwise the meal was fabulous. Extra points for "buying the kitchen a round" as a dessert. Nice to see a restaurant with a sense of humor.
