A World Without Trees

Could you imagine it?

I spoke with someone who considers me a bit of a tree hugger because I spend so much time photographing and being in their company. The debate was about if the world could in the future survive without trees. If technology became that advanced we could recycle the air we breathe through mechanical means rather than depend on trees to be the lungs of the earth. This would mean we could use this "valuable" resource and free up the land to farm or rear food to feed the masses. As the worlds population is growing at a rate beyond our capabilities to feed it would it not be better to sacrifice trees for food if it was possible?

The thought process being is that the human race would not be concerned as much about endangered trees as they would with endangered animals as they are hardly cute and fluffy!!

For myself regardless of the arguments of whether we could live without trees why would anyone want to? I know many people simply walk by without a second thought but when you stop and look at these majestic plants you cannot help but be in awe of them.

My sad thought though is if it was possible, then the human race probably would live without trees, the same way we now live without the Dodo, Tasmanian wolf, Turanian tiger, probably the mountain gorilla and few more we have decided to bring to the brink of extinction. You don't think it possible mankind is capable of it?

In 1830 there were an estimates 70 to 150 million buffalo in America until we "found" it, now there are some 250,000 in public and private herds!

Just imagine, a world without trees.
