On the brighter side of things, the government of #Uruguay and IOM have signed an agreement for the resettlement of 120 refugees from #Syria.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed following a recent announcement by Uruguayan President Jose Mujica offering shelter to vulnerable refugees from Syria.
The IOM Mission in Uruguay has began working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Human Rights, and UNHCR to ensure a smooth arrival and integration for the refugees in the South American country.

CNN's Hala Gorani speaks with IOM Director General William Lacy Swing about the volume of desperate migrants crossing borders over the Mediterranean.

What happened to the people who lost their homes after the strongest typhoon ever recorded hit the Philippines?

After six months gathering data from people living in all kinds of displacement sites, IOM and the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) launch a new report that gives a picture of the massive scale of displacement caused by typhoon Haiyan and the issues faced by men, women and children across the affected region. During the course of the emergency response, IOM drew on expertise from SAS Visual Analytics to quickly gain an understanding of the evolving needs of people uprooted by the typhoon.

IOM Director General William Lacy Swing shows his support for the #MigrationMeans campaign!

“Migrants bring a lot with them, new skills, cultural diversity and energy. But in crises, migration takes on new associations – shelter, warmth, access to health services, food, water, and so on. The campaign will communicate the meaning of migration across the broadest canvas.”

Let us know what migration means to you! Join the conversation and use the hashtag #MigrationMeans!

IOM Director General William Lacy Swing condemns growing levels of violence against migrant workers worldwide.

Speaking following an official visit to China, where he met with senior Chinese officials, he said that there is never any justification for violence targeting migrant workers anywhere in the world.

“Migrant workers are vulnerable and States must recognize their obligations under national and international law to provide them with the protection that they need,” he said.

IOM The Migration Agency
Introduction
Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners.

With 146 member states, a further 13 states holding observer status and offices in over 100 countries, IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

IOM works in the four broad areas of migration management: Migration and development, Facilitating migration, Regulating migration, Forced migration.

IOM activities that cut across these areas include the promotion of international migration law, policy debate and guidance, protection of migrants' rights, migration health and the gender dimension of migration.
