Thanks Society Insurance for the recent information regarding Data Breach coverage! Here is a little tid bit...

Data breach coverage offers protection for costs associated with the accidental exposure of sensitive customer data due to occurrences such as hacking, theft, and the accidental release of data. This coverage will help to cover costs involved with the notification of clients and government authorities of a potential data breach, as well as legal liability costs to protect against claims from victims.
Do your policyholders believe they are immune from a data breach that could expose their customers’ information? Make sure they understand the risks and incredible costs of dealing with a data breach. Class action lawsuits often seek damages upward of $5,000 per person, and the average expense involved in responding to 1,000 exposed records is staggering:
• Internal investigation: $14,000
• Regulatory/Compliance: $125,000
• Notification/Crisis Management: $28,000
• Total: $167,000

Below are recent examples* of data breach cases from around the country:

• Glenwood IGA, Orofino, Idaho (April 2012): The grocery store was made aware of a breach after nearly 300 customers reported fraudulent charges on their credit cards. Unauthorized purchase attempts were made across the globe.

• Comfort Inn & Suites, San Antonio (March 2012): More than 500 credit card receipts were stolen from the hotel for the purpose of making fraudulent credit cards, two of which were used to make unauthorized purchases.

• Advocate Medical Group, Park Ridge, Ill. (August 2013): An office theft of four computers resulted in the exposure of medical records and personal data. Four million patients seen between the early 1990s and July 2013 were affected.

Congratulations to Mike Laffey, Account Executive of Health and Life for Snyder Insurance, for winning Employee of the Month for October! Mike has been with Snyder Insurance and The Snyder Companies for the last 24 years, or as he likes to say, “since I was 5”.

Mike was nominated for this award by Snyder Insurance Marketing Director Brookelyn Dickson. “I see Mike’s car parked outside on week days past 8pm and he is usually in the office before 8am. I even see his car in the parking lot as I drive by on the weekends; his office is the only light on in the building. He is a very hard worker. The industry Mike works in is currently going through lots of changes with the laws. Mike has taken the extra step to educate him, so that he can be an advocate and the ‘go to person’ for all the Snyder employees, as well as his other clients. It is crazy how things are changing and all the uncertainties with Obamacare, he really tries to make the process seem not too frightening. These next couple months are going to be very busy for Mike and from what I can tell, he is handling it like a pro!”- Brookelyn
In Mike’s spare time he loves running, going to ISU Athletic events, being in the Kiwanis Club of Bloomington and most of all visiting his baby granddaughter, every chance he gets! For a yummy meal, Mike enjoys eating his favorite food of Cedar Plank Grilled Salmon with Angel Hair Pasta
When Mike was asked what he likes most about working for The Snyder Companies he replied: “Helping my clients and Snyder associates understand how our life insurance, health insurance and financial products serve and protect them on an everyday basis.”

Mike’s hard work, drive to help others, and dedication for his job and the company is the reason he is employee of the month for October.
Thank you Mike for all that you do and congratulations, you deserve it!

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 202 children drowned this year between Memorial Day and Labor Day. That horrific statistic equals 67 drownings per month.

While parental supervision is critical when your children are near a pool or spa, you can make a number of upgrades to your pool to prevent a child from drowning. Consider using your tax return or a Christmas bonus to upgrade your pool or spa to keep your family, friends, and neighbors safe.

1. Install a five-foot or taller fence around the pool and use self-closing and self-latching gates; ask your neighbors to do the same at their pools.

2. Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa.

3. If your house serves as a fourth side of a fence around a pool, install door alarms and always use them. For added protection, install window guards on windows facing pools or spas.

4. Install pool and gate alarms to alert you when children go near the water.

5. Make sure any pool and spa you use has compliant drain covers; ask your pool service provider if you don’t know.

6. Keep your pool or spa cover in good shape. If you notice defects, have them repaired, if possible, or buy a new one.
