Born Terrence Wormack in the small city of Lumberton NC, Akademic quickly became the poster child for what he now calls a “skin deep” Christian. Being very active at a young age in his childhood church, he mastered every religious custom and mannerism involved with Sunday morning worship. On Sunday morning he was the young man that sang on the choir, was a member of the usher board, and even spent many Sundays in the pulpit beside the pastor. Monday through Saturday, he hung out with guys who didn’t go to church, chased young girls and had one of the foulest mouths amongst his peers. At age 13, eager to follow his brother’s passion for rap music he formed a group with his childhood best friend. Performing in local talent shows under the moniker Da One Called T.R.I.F.A.(pron. “try-fuh”), Terrence wrote, performed and recorded with a group of local rappers co-founded by his older brother Zuan (pron. “zon”) and collectively known as the Roof Top Crew.
Chasing his musical dream Terrence attending Elizabeth City State University majoring in Music Industry Studies but later changed his major to Mass Communications.
After moving to Charlotte, NC he further pursued his desire for women, partying and big city night life until December 23, 2005 where an emergency visit to the hospital served as a pivotal moment in Terrence’s life. Although the visit was later deemed benign, “It was at that point that I realized that while I’ve seen friends and family going in and out of doctor’s offices, my health had been perfect. Not one doctor’s visit in over 20 years! I knew then that God had been looking out for me and I truly woke up. I no longer wanted to abuse his grace”, he recalls. “I was convicted.”
On April 14, 2006 while alone at home, Terrence tearfully knelt down, confessed and accepted Christ as Lord and Savior. The next few months he submerged himself into the scriptures, committing to reading the Holy Bible from cover to cover. During this time, he shared scriptures with his friends and coworkers on a daily basis determined to show his peers his new life in Christ.
With his taste in music changing, it was recommended that he purchase the CD of Christian rapper Da Truth. “The Faith
was the album that introduced me to gospel rap. I knew there were Christian rappers out there, but I didn’t know that were any who’s skills could rival secular artists…….., I was wrong.”
After years without performing or recording, Terrence picked up his pen and Akademic was born. “I chose the moniker Akademic to reflect Proverbs 1:7 which I paraphrase to say ‘You know nothing until you know God’.”
Today, Akademic writes, perform, and produces music with a diverse group of young talents in genres ranging from Christian Rap, Christian Rock, Gospel Soul, and Poetry. He resides in Winston Salem, NC with his beautiful wife Tamyra.
“I have no desire to be famous. God’s given me a talent. All I’m doing is giving it back to Him.”
