#OnThisDay in 1945, the 3-day bombing of Dresden relented. Over 3,900 tons of high-explosive bombs and incendiary devices were dropped on the city, resulting in an estimated death toll of 25,000.

#OnThisDay in 1661, Oliver Cromwell was posthumously executed. His body was removed from its burial place in Westminster Abbey, and his head placed on a spike outside Westminster Hall during the reign of Charles II. The head is now buried at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.
