"PatternBuilders closes - Mary Ludloff & I on why we closed and where the money in big data is. Bad luck was part of it, but a strong belief that #bigdata is a feature not a product clinched the decision for us. http://wp.me/p12Bbj-Hw" All Things Must Come to an End—PatternBuilders is Shutting Down

I cannot confirm this story, about a West Point graduate and former Army officer who is waging a campaign of citizen sousveillance against bullying by Austin police.  But if due-diligence shows it not to be exaggerated, then it is a sign that times truly are heading toward the kind of reciprocal accountability in The Transparent Society.  In which case (if true) it could be a cause worthy of your support.

“site of a young West Point grad who ran afoul of police trying to intervene by filming what he considered inappropriate activities of a police officer. Then he attempted to arrest him and charge him with various made up of offenses. These charges were thrown out of court. Since then Antonio has made it his mission in life to bring police misconduct to the attention of the public by tracking and videotaping police activities . He has been charged with felonies multiple time with all being thrown out. Now he is launching a civil court action…”

I would like to encourage everyone to take a look at the site below and join me in calling on the US government to provide US citizens enough information to provide informed consent on domestic spying.

Our government needs to state the scope of what it is allowed to do, the legal opinions that justify it, and provide us statistics of the number of innocent Americans that are "coincidentally" caught up in the NSA dragnet.

I am not anti-national security but a system of secret courts, secret rulings and gag orders is not the way to either freedom or safety.

Great post by my partner in crime @mludloff on the dark side of Big Data. The civil rights implications of BD are just being understood. With a hat tip to a couple of great recent pieces on the issues by @acroll&@ethicsinthenews http://wp.me/p12Bbj-v5 Mary brings a personal touch to the issues. Mary and I will be digging into these issues in more depth at Strata NYC -@strataconf and this year's update to our book - Privacy & Big Data.

OK its an ad. But it is also an amazing window into how ubiquitous technology that would have been considered magic even 50 years ago is becoming. We truly live in an age of wonders.

Big Data Made Easy Video. If you read our blog you have seen this one but the reaction has been so positive that we moved the video to youtube to share it more broadly.

Mary has a nice post about the panel that I am moderating at Strata West on #bigdata, Supply Chain, and the Internet of things on Tuesday. If you are going to Strata come by and check it out.

My thoughts on the Infoworld article about the lack of fit between big data and the cloud.
