Tesla: All Our Patent Are Belong to You

Welp, +Tesla Motors has just made their electric vehicle patents open source for the world. What?!

According to the official blog post:

"Technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world’s most talented engineers. We believe that applying the open source philosophy to our patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla’s position in this regard."

Read +Elon Musk's full statement here: http://dustn.ws/1q8cjJ2

This makes me love Tesla all the more. Some day soon I'll be as cool as +Eric Enge and have one of my own.

What do you think about Tesla's new open-source stance?

On Glorification

"Let me tell you a story. The day after Columbine, I was interviewed for the Tom Brokaw news program. The reporter had been assigned a theory and was seeking sound bites to support it. "Wouldn't you say," she asked, "that killings like this are influenced by violent movies?" No, I said, I wouldn't say that. "But what about 'Basketball Diaries'?" she asked. "Doesn't that have a scene of a boy walking into a school with a machine gun?" The obscure 1995 Leonardo Di Caprio movie did indeed have a brief fantasy scene of that nature, I said, but the movie failed at the box office (it grossed only $2.5 million), and it's unlikely the Columbine killers saw it.

The reporter looked disappointed, so I offered her my theory. "Events like this," I said, "if they are influenced by anything, are influenced by news programs like your own. When an unbalanced kid walks into a school and starts shooting, it becomes a major media event. Cable news drops ordinary programming and goes around the clock with it. The story is assigned a logo and a theme song; these two kids were packaged as the Trench Coat Mafia. The message is clear to other disturbed kids around the country: If I shoot up my school, I can be famous. The TV will talk about nothing else but me. Experts will try to figure out what I was thinking. The kids and teachers at school will see they shouldn't have messed with me. I'll go out in a blaze of glory."

In short, I said, events like Columbine are influenced far less by violent movies than by CNN, the NBC Nightly News and all the other news media, who glorify the killers in the guise of "explaining" them. I commended the policy at the Sun-Times, where our editor said the paper would no longer feature school killings on Page 1. The reporter thanked me and turned off the camera. Of course the interview was never used. They found plenty of talking heads to condemn violent movies, and everybody was happy." -- Roger Ebert

Thought I would share with you guys a few things I ended up doing for our Pathfinder group when we played Kingmaker a while back. Sorry if they don't work in certain browsers. And there is no guide for using the creator, haha.

Map I made for our Kingmaker group.

Awesome.

25-GPU cluster cracks every standard Windows password in <6 hours

The #Linux-based GPU cluster runs the Virtual OpenCL cluster platform, which allows the graphics cards to function as if they were running on a single desktop computer. ocl-Hashcat Plus, a freely available password-cracking suite optimized for GPU computing, runs on top, allowing the machine to tackle at least 44 other algorithms at near-unprecedented speeds. In addition to brute-force attacks, the cluster can bring that speed to cracks that use a variety of other techniques, including dictionary attacks containing millions of words.

A password-cracking expert has unveiled a computer cluster that can cycle through as many as 350 billion guesses per second. It's an almost unprecedented speed that can try every possible Windows passcode in the typical enterprise in less than six hours.

The five-server system uses a relatively new package of virtualization software that harnesses the power of 25 AMD Radeon graphics cards. It achieves the 350 billion-guess-per-second speed when cracking password hashes generated by the NTLM cryptographic algorithm that Microsoft included in every version of Windows since Server 2003. As a result, it can try an astounding 958 combinations in just 5.5 hours, enough to brute force every possible eight-character password containing upper- and lower-case letters, digits, and symbols. Such password policies are common in many enterprise settings.

The same passwords protected by Microsoft's LM algorithm—which many organizations enable for compatibility with older Windows versions—will fall in just six minutes.

An interactive shell within your text editor. About halfway through the demo you'll be like "yeah i get it..." and then the next 60 seconds will blow your mind.

"They are deprioritizing their hobbies, leisure activities", when will people stop applying their stupid bias on other people activities... SCIENCE is their hobby and their leisure time... OMGWTFBBQ its not golf its not a hobby... leave your self delusions at home. If you love your work it is not the horrid job you think it is because you forced yourself into a field you loathe and despise every day of your life, other people don't do that, just you. It should be titled "The Results Are in: Scientists Are Awesome", that is all. </rant>

Interesting. Nothing's new though. I don't think anyone is really surprised by this!

This also goes with my biggest pet peeve: when someone does something incredible and others say they have too much time on their hands. Just because they don't spend their spare time watching tv (which isn't bad either cause, you know, spare time) then they are not as busy as everyone else. They just use that time in a different way.
