"Staffing: UCL’s new Open Access Funding Team

One of the challenges of managing open access is the proliferation of publisher, funder and institutional policies, and the granularity of administration inherent in article-level processing. UCL has recently increased staffing levels in its institutional repository, UCL Discovery, and created an Open Access Funding Team to manage APC payments.

The Open Access Funding Team was established soon after the introduction of the RCUK Open Access Policy. The Team comprises an Open Access Funding Manager (already experienced in processing APC payments for Wellcome Trust-funded articles), two Open Access Funding Assistants (appointed in September and November 2013) and an Open Access Compliance Officer (to be appointed shortly).

The Open Access Funding Team aims to simplify all aspects of the open access process for UCL authors. Its role is to facilitate efficient and speedy APC payments, liaise with publishers and funders to remove administrative barriers for authors, promote open access throughout UCL, monitor open access levels and report to funders and to UCL senior management."
