My interests have always been on the public service side of the hobby; however, I also value the operator skills one learns while working contests.
I am actively involved with the Tinley Park Emergency Management Agency and serve as their Chief RACES Radio Officer and Radio Station Trustee, as well as Skywarn Administrator. I am trying to rebuild ARES / RACES for our municipality. Any one interested in getting involved with Tinley Park's EMA / RACES or ARES can send me an email or call 708-267-6664.
I have completed the ARRL Emergency Communications level one and two classes, as well as completed more than the required FEMA NIMS certifications. None of the above are a substitute for real-world experience. In general the courses raised more questions in my mind than they answered. I suspect that was one of their goals.
I hold appointments as the Assistant Emergency Coordinator for Cook County ARES for the Village of Tinley Park, ARES Official Emergency Station (OES). and as an Official Relay Station (ORS) for the Amateur Radio national Traffic System (NTS),
I am a certified member of the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN) and run the Chicago Metro VHF SATERN net on the first Tuesday of each month. I have completed all of the required training for the Salvation Army and expect to take many more of their courses.
I might need a second life time, just to learn a tiny fraction of what I don't know. There are so many areas of Amateur Radio to explore and experiment with. Not to mention an amazing array of hobbyists and perspective HAMs to share our hobby with and many other life experiences.
In case it matters. I am almost completely blind. I can't read the the displays and buttons on most of my equipment. Zoom Text Text-to-Speech is used as much as possible with electronic documents. My desk top magnifier can blow things up some 50 times to make printed books, pager displays, HT displays, and many other things accessible.
I recently joined Courage Handi Hams in early 2007. I am happy to help anyone in my areas that might require assistance in coping with their visual challenges or that might desire to learn Amateur Radio to expand their reach to the world and build new friendships.
