During one of my recent workshops at Nickerson Beach I told the story of how I first started photographing birds and how they became one of my main photography subjects. But truth be told bears were at the very top of my list when I first started photographing. Living in NJ that meant unless I ...

The image directly below was captured as this tiny Common Tern chick walked straight towards me and my group. It obviously had no idea of the danger; I worried for its safety as did the others. Without any hesitation the tiny chick strayed far away from “mom”. We didn't want it to continue out ...

I added a texture overlay to both of these Puffin images. In addition to the texture I applied a small amount of “Detail Extractor” to the background to bring out some of the additional lines in the texture. What appealed to me in both of these images is the interaction between the Puffins.

Well, maybe not the best but certainly my favorite. Please click on the images to see the larger, sharper versions. The castle image above is Bamburgh Castle. We shot it as the sun set. It appears to have a slight dark ring around the moon, however that is in the original.

Introduction

I am a full time professional photographer, workshop leader, and artist living in New Jersey. One of my recent (of many) eBooks is Bloomin' Ideas. It features 55 of my evocative flower images that represent my unique way of blending art and nature. I travel extensively presenting slide lectures and seminars and teaching photography and Photoshop. My workshops feature a variety of subjects including: avian, flower, urbex and HDR photography. I was a moderator for Bird Photographers Net in the Out-of-the-Box Forum for 4 years where I worked helping participants improve their images using innovative techniques done either in-camera or during post-processing.

In 2010 and again in 2014 I received a Highly Honored award in the prestigious Windland Smith Rice Nature's Best competition. Also in 2014 one of my images was selected as part of the People's Choice Awards Top 50 Images in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition. I have also won several PSA (Photographic Society of America) awards. My images have been published in magazines and books, sold as greeting cards, calendars and most recently featured in a Sierra Club Documentary.
