There is a lot more to this question, and some parts do not want to be listened to by Americans. Trump was a populist candidate... he was voted in strictly by the numbers. People wish the "party" would have intervened. In the case of the Democrats, people are suspicious that maybe the "party" intervened and they think that is wrong. But you can't have it both ways. The party system and the electoral system were set up exactly to thwart direct democracy... and maybe that was for good reason.
