Northern Shovelers

For #birdpoker, curated by +Phil Armishaw. The hand is "interaction." Seems to be a lot if interaction in this picture. Some onlookers referred to it as "vortexing." To me, it looked like a giant merry-go-round of ducks.

You can do that because you're the biologist.

(Tip from a professional biologist:  The boys are prettier.)

Tundra Swan at Walden Ponds

I haven't posted any pictures for a while.  It's winter in Colorado, and we Tucson immigrants hibernate during the winter.  But today it climbed into the 50s, so I ventured out to my favorite bird spot, Walden Ponds in #Boulder.  This Tundra Swan came down for a visit, and found an unfrozen corner of the Cottonwood Marsh pond to hang out.  A new bird for me!

If you haven't had tundra swans in your swimming pool yet, it's probably not going to happen, +John Walkenbach. You don't want Canada geese in there either. Or their eider.

All of our bird baths are elevated, +Greg Batten. A wading pool would be easy hunting for our ferocious little cat, Emma.

Yep, just joking. That red eye is part of the bird. ;)

Going in for the Kill

A belted kingfisher for #Birdpoker "kingfishers" curated by +Phil Armishaw .

This is a heavily cropped photo, like all my kingfisher photos, since they always seem to be flying or perched as far as they can get from me.  Saw this one yesterday at Walden Ponds in #Boulder , Colorado.

Duck!

Today was sunny with temperatures climbing into the 60s.  I checked out a new location--Prospect Park, in Wheatridge, CO.  The Shovelers were shoveling, and this one particular Common Goldeneye seemed to be working on yoga moves.

Way Cool
Imagine being in one place and using your hands to move something somewhere else. Watch and wonder.

A Walk on Davidson Mesa

After today's drizzle ended and the sun poked out, I took a late afternoon walk on Davidson Mesa, in Louisville, #Boulder County, Colorado.  The sun kept moving in and out, making for some interesting and challenging lighting.

4th of July Fireworks

Here's my attempt at capturing some of last night's "rockets' red glare" and "bombs bursting in air."

  #fireworks #4thofjuly
Independence Day 2013. This was our first 4th of July fireworks display since moving to Colorado last summer (they were cancelled in 2012 because of fire danger). Turns out, the best viewpoint in town is right down the street from our house! They were so close, in fact, that my choice of lenses (70-200mm set at 70) was too long. Next time I'll have to use my wide-angle.

When they are flying in a V they usually synchronize their wing beats.  Saves energy as they are drafting each other.
